Indonesian virgin coconut oil
Virgin coconut oil is pressed from fresh coconut kernel by mechanical or natural means, without refining, bleaching or deodorising. That definition is what separates it from RBD coconut oil and from copra oil, both of which are also sold as coconut oil and cost considerably less.
How it leaves the country.
- Virgin coconut oil
- From fresh kernel, unrefined. Retains the coconut aroma, and the aroma is part of how a buyer checks it is what it claims to be.1
- RBD coconut oil
- Refined, bleached and deodorised. A legitimate product with its own uses, and not virgin oil at any price.1
- Copra oil
- Pressed from dried kernel rather than fresh. The cheapest of the three and the one most often passed off as the others.1
How it is graded.
There is a published standard for this product and it does the work. Name it in the contract, name the parameters, and ask for the analysis on the batch that shipped.
- Standard
- The Asian and Pacific Coconut Community standard for virgin coconut oil, alongside the Indonesian national standard SNI 7381.1
- What it sets
- Moisture and volatile matter, free fatty acid, peroxide value and contaminants, plus the definition of what may be called virgin at all.1
- Cosmetic or food
- The same oil serves both, but the destination's rules differ. A cosmetic ingredient carries obligations a food ingredient does not, and the paperwork follows the use.
How it is packed.
- Containers
- Lined drums or food-grade IBCs, filled by net weight. Coconut oil solidifies below room temperature, which is normal and is not a defect.
- Sampling
- Retain samples on both sides against the shipped batch. Free fatty acid climbs with poor storage, so an arrival result can differ from a departure one for honest reasons.

- Moisture, free fatty acid and peroxide value on the batch that shipped, against the standard named in the contract.1
- Safety data sheet
- Required by whoever handles the goods downstream, and the basis for how the drum is classified in transit.
- REACH
- For the EU and for cosmetic use, the registration obligation sits with the importer or an appointed only representative.2
- Certificate of origin
- Which form applies depends on the destination and on the preference scheme in force between it and Indonesia.
Questions buyers ask.
How do I know I am getting virgin oil?
The analysis and the smell. Virgin oil keeps the coconut aroma; refined oil has had it removed on purpose. If a quotation is far below the market and the sample smells of nothing, you are being offered RBD or copra oil under another name.
Cold pressed or centrifuged?
Both are accepted routes to virgin oil and they give slightly different profiles. What matters more is whether the kernel was fresh, because oil from dried kernel is copra oil however gently it was pressed.
Is coconut oil covered by EUDR?
Coconut is not one of the seven commodities the regulation lists, so it sits outside. Palm is listed, and a blended product carrying a palm-derived ingredient is a different question decided by the formula.
