Safety data sheet

A safety data sheet describes a substance for the people who handle it: composition, hazards, first aid, firefighting, spill response, storage and transport classification. For essential oils and for charcoal it travels with the goods and decides how the carrier treats them.

The essentials.

Who needs it
The carrier, the forwarder, the warehouse and your own staff. Anyone who has to know what is in the drum before something goes wrong with it.
What it drives
Transport classification. Whether a consignment moves as general cargo or as regulated cargo is decided from this document, and that decision changes the booking.
Who writes it
The producer, from their own composition data. A sheet that arrives with another company's name on it describes another company's product.

Who asks for it.

This travels with the goods wherever they go. Either Indonesia requires it on the way out, or it is an ordinary trade document that any buyer, bank and carrier expects to see.

What it does not cover.

  • It is not a certificate of analysis

A safety data sheet describes the substance in general. A certificate of analysis describes the batch that shipped. Buyers regularly accept the first when they needed the second.

  • It is not a compliance document

It says nothing about whether the product may be sold in your market. Registration, notification and labelling are separate questions with separate paperwork.

Questions buyers ask.

Why does the carrier keep asking for it?

Because they cannot classify the booking without it. Oils and charcoal can fall into regulated categories depending on their properties, and a line that has not seen the sheet will assume the cautious answer and price accordingly.

Can the supplier reuse an old one?

Only if the product has not changed. A sheet that predates a reformulation, or one copied from a different grade, describes something you are not shipping, and that becomes visible at exactly the wrong moment.

Tell us the product and the destination port. We come back with the full document set for that route, who issues each one, and how long it takes.

One line is enough to start. The more exact you are, the faster the answer comes back.
