Virgin or refined coconut oil.
Virgin coconut oil is pressed from fresh coconut without chemical refining or bleaching, and it keeps the aroma. RBD oil is refined, bleached and deodorised, usually from copra, and it is neutral and cheaper. Both are legitimate products, and paying virgin prices for RBD is the common mistake.

Which to choose.
- You are selling the coconut character to a consumer
- Virgin, with the standard named and analysis on the shipped lot.
- You are making soap, cosmetics base or a food ingredient
- RBD. The aroma would be a defect and you would be paying to remove it.
- The quotation says virgin at a suspiciously good price
- Smell the sample. That test costs nothing and catches most of it.
Questions buyers ask.
Is extra virgin coconut oil a real category?
It is marketing language borrowed from olive oil. Coconut oil standards define virgin and there is no recognised grade above it, so extra virgin means whatever the seller wants it to mean. Contract on the standard and the analysis rather than on the adjective.
Is cold pressed the same as virgin?
It describes one part of the process rather than the product. Virgin is defined by what was not done, meaning no refining, bleaching or deodorising. Cold pressed describes the extraction temperature. An oil can be cold pressed and then refined, at which point it is no longer virgin.
Which one does Indonesia export more of?
RBD and crude coconut oil by a large margin, because they are commodity products moving in bulk. Virgin coconut oil is a smaller and more specialised trade with a very different set of producers, and the two rarely come from the same operation.
How do I verify a virgin oil?
Smell it, then test it. Aroma catches the crude substitutions. A certificate of analysis on the shipped lot against the published standard catches the rest, and a retained sample gives you something to hold the delivery against.
