Essential oils & personal care

Indonesian nutmeg oil

Nutmeg oil is steam-distilled from the seed of Myristica fragrans, a tree native to the Banda islands. Indonesia distils it across Maluku, North Sulawesi and West Papua. Composition varies noticeably by growing region, and two of its components carry regulatory weight in food and cosmetic use.

How it leaves the country.

Nutmeg oil
From the seed. The main product, used in flavour, fragrance and oleoresin work.
Mace oil
From the aril, the red lace around the seed. A separate oil with a separate profile and a separate price.
Whole spice
Nutmeg and mace also ship as spice rather than oil. Different trade, different documents, different buyers.

How it is graded.

Nutmeg oil is contracted on composition and physical constants, and the growing region belongs on the specification because it moves the composition. Two of the components matter for reasons that have nothing to do with smell.

Standard
SNI 06-2388, nutmeg oil1
Contracted on
Myristicin content, specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation, alongside the origin region.
Safrole is a regulatory question
Its use in food and cosmetics is restricted in some markets, so the destination decides what is acceptable. Establish the requirement before you contract on a figure.

How it is packed.

Containers
Filled by net weight into lined drums, kept away from light and heat. Composition drifts with poor storage.
Sampling
Retain samples on both sides against the shipped batch. It is the only way a dispute about composition gets settled later.

Where it grows.

  • Banda

    Maluku

Where nutmeg comes from, and the ecotype the trade knows by name. Small volumes, long history.

  • Ternate and Ambon

    Maluku

The wider Maluku producing area, feeding both the spice and the oil trades.

  • North Sulawesi

    Sulawesi

A substantial producing region with its own composition profile and its own distillers.

  • West Papua

    Papua

A separate population of trees, and oils that do not read the same as Maluku material.

Origins with a protected name.

Names the trade contracts on, most of them on the Indonesian register of geographical indications.

Documentation, where applicable.

Certificate of analysis
Composition and physical constants on the batch that shipped, against the figures in the contract.
Safety data sheet
Required by everyone handling the goods downstream, and the basis for how the drum is classified in transit.
REACH
For the EU, the registration obligation sits with the importer or an appointed only representative.2
Certificate of origin
Which form applies depends on the destination and on the preference scheme in force between it and Indonesia.

What a shipment needs depends on the product, the producer and the market it is going to. We map the documents against your destination before anyone quotes a price.

Questions buyers ask.

Does the growing region really change the oil?

Yes, measurably. Studies of Maluku, Sulawesi and Papuan material show different composition, and the Banda ecotype is distinct enough that the trade names it. If your formulation was built on one origin, write that origin into the specification.

Why does safrole matter?

Because its use is restricted in food and cosmetic applications in some markets. It is a compliance question rather than a quality one, and the acceptable level is set by where the product is going, not by the distiller.

Nutmeg oil or mace oil?

They come from the same fruit and are not interchangeable. Mace is the red aril around the seed and yields a different oil at a different price. Name which one you are buying, because a purchase order that just says nutmeg leaves it open.

What does your service cost?

Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.

Tell us what you need.

Give us the specification and the destination port. We come back with producer options and an indicative price. Our fee is 5 % of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory.

One line is enough to start. The more exact you are, the faster the answer comes back.
