Fakfak nutmeg
Fakfak in West Papua grows what the trade calls Papuan nutmeg, and it is registered as Pala Tomandin. It is a different botanical species from the nutmeg of Banda and Siau, which is the single most important thing to know before buying or accepting it.

Registered for West Papua. Tomandin is the local name, and the registration is what separates this origin from the Maluku species on paper.
What makes it different.
- Myristica argentea
- Papuan nutmeg is its own species. The seed is longer and narrower than the Banda type and the aroma profile differs, so the two are not interchangeable in a formulation.
- Semi-wild groves
- Much of the crop grows in forest gardens tended over generations rather than in planted blocks. It shapes yields and it complicates traceability.
- Substitution is the commercial risk
- Papuan nutmeg trades cheaper than the Maluku species and looks similar enough to pass a quick glance. Specify the species in Latin on the purchase order.
- Remote even by Indonesian standards
- Fakfak sits on the Bomberai peninsula with limited shipping. Lead times are long and consolidation happens far from the growing area.

Can Papuan nutmeg replace Banda nutmeg?
Only if you decided that deliberately. They are different species with different aroma profiles, and the price gap between them is exactly why an unscrupulous supplier would make the swap. Write Myristica fragrans or Myristica argentea into the contract and have the shipped material identified.
Is Fakfak nutmeg lower quality?
It is a different product, and it has its own uses and its own buyers. Judging it as a cheap version of the Banda species misses the point and also misses the risk, which is being sold one while paying for the other.
How do I verify the species?
Physically the seeds differ in shape, and a laboratory can confirm identity where the value justifies it. The practical protection is a retained sample from the shipped lot plus the geographical indication on the paperwork, because the registration ties the name to this species and this place.
