Siau nutmeg
Siau is a small volcanic island in the Sangihe chain north of Sulawesi, and its nutmeg carries a registered geographical indication. Almost the whole island grows it, which makes Siau one of the most concentrated single-crop origins in Indonesia.

What makes it different.
- One island, one crop
- Nutmeg is grown across the island rather than in pockets of it. That concentration is why a small place has a registration of its own.
- Active volcanic ground
- Siau sits under Mount Karangetang, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes. It gives the soil and it also means eruptions periodically disrupt supply.
- Manado is the gateway
- Material moves by boat to Manado and is consolidated there. It is the same route the North Sulawesi clove and coconut trades use.
- Drying is the whole quality question
- Island humidity and a slow boat are a hard combination for a crop judged on mould. How the seed was dried before it left matters more than anything after.

How does Siau compare with Banda nutmeg?
Same species, separate registered origins, different scale. Banda trades on history and produces in small quantity. Siau is a whole island given over to the crop, so it is the more practical origin when you need volume with a verifiable name behind it.
Does the volcano affect supply?
Karangetang is genuinely active and eruptions have interrupted the island before. It is worth knowing when you plan a season's purchasing from a single origin, and it is an argument for keeping a second registered origin qualified.
What should I test for?
Mould toxins first, then moisture and volatile oil. Nutmeg from any humid island origin carries the same risk, and the answer is a certificate of analysis on the shipped lot rather than a general assurance about the region.
