Indonesian albasia barecore
Barecore is a solid wood panel made by edge-gluing short strips of albasia, also called sengon, into a board that a furniture factory then veneers or laminates. Indonesia produces it in volume from fast-growing plantation timber, and it is bought on moisture content, joint quality and glue.
How it leaves the country.
- Standard barecore panel
- Edge-glued strips in a fixed thickness and sheet size, sanded and ready to be faced. The volume product.
- Finger-jointed
- Strips joined end to end as well as edge to edge, which uses shorter offcuts and changes how the panel behaves under load.
- Laminated and faced
- Barecore with a veneer or a decorative film already applied. Higher value, and it moves the quality question onto the facing.
- Blockboard core
- The same idea supplied as a core for blockboard production, where the facing is applied by the buyer.
How it is graded.
There is no international grading scale for barecore. What exists is a set of properties a furniture factory has to name, and an offer that does not address them is not comparable with one that does.
- Moisture content
- The single most important line. A panel that arrives wetter than the destination's indoor equilibrium will move, cup and open at the joints after it is faced.
- Glue type
- Interior glues and moisture-resistant glues are different products at different prices. The application decides which one, so state it.
- Joint and gap quality
- Open joints, overlaps and filler telegraph through a thin veneer. Inspect a faced sample instead of a bare panel, because bare stock hides the defect that matters.
- Formaldehyde emission
- A glued wood panel entering the United States has to meet a federal emission standard, and European and Japanese buyers set their own classes.1
- Thickness tolerance
- Panels feed through a factory's machines at a set thickness. Variation across a pallet costs more in a production line than it saves at purchase.
How it is packed.
- Palletised and strapped
- Stacked flat, banded and wrapped. Panels warp if a pallet is stored on edge or unevenly supported, so stowage instructions matter.
- Loaded to weight
- Solid wood is heavy and a container reaches its weight limit before it fills. Plan the order in cubic metres and check the payload.
- Moisture in transit
- A tropical container sweats, and a dried panel takes water back up. Wrapping and desiccant belong in the specification on long routes.
- Pallet marking
- The pallets under the load carry the heat treatment mark, and it is checked independently of the cargo.2

- Applies to the packaging under the cargo. A missing mark holds a container even when the panels themselves are in order.2

Questions buyers ask.
What is albasia, and is it a hardwood?
Albasia is Falcataria moluccana, also called sengon, a very fast growing plantation tree. Botanically it is a hardwood, though it is light and soft and behaves nothing like teak. It is grown as a crop on smallholdings across Java, which is why supply is steady and why traceability takes work.
Why does moisture content cause so many claims?
Because the defect appears after the panel has been faced and built into furniture. A board that arrives above the destination's indoor equilibrium gives up water for weeks, and the movement opens joints and telegraphs through veneer. By then the panel has been through your production line and the cost is furniture, not stock.
Should I inspect bare panels or faced samples?
Faced. Bare barecore looks acceptable in a yard, and the joint gaps and filler that decide whether a finished piece is saleable only become visible once a thin veneer is over them. Ask for the sample in the construction you intend to sell.
