Indonesian coconut shell activated carbon
Coconut shell activated carbon is charcoal that has been steam activated at high temperature to open its pore structure. Indonesia has the shell supply to make it in volume. It is bought as an adsorbent on measured properties, and it has nothing in common commercially with the briquettes made from the same shell.
How it leaves the country.
- Granular
- Crushed and screened to a mesh range. The form used in water treatment columns and gas phase beds, where flow through the bed matters.
- Powdered
- Milled fine and dosed into a liquid rather than packed into a column. Cheaper to make and used once.
- Pelletised
- Extruded into cylinders for gas applications where pressure drop across the bed has to stay low.
- Impregnated
- Treated with a reagent for a specific target such as mercury or hydrogen sulphide. A specialist product with its own handling questions.
How it is graded.
There is no single quality scale here. Activated carbon is specified against the job it has to do, and the properties that decide it are measurable and belong in the contract.
- Iodine number
- The standard proxy for micropore surface area, reported in milligrams per gram. The figure buyers quote first, and on its own it does not describe the product.
- Hardness and attrition
- How much of the material survives handling and backwashing. It decides how often a column has to be topped up, so it drives running cost more than purchase price does.
- Mesh distribution
- The particle size range, written as a sieve pair. Getting this wrong shows up as pressure drop or as carbon carried out of the bed.
- Ash and moisture
- Ash is inert weight you paid for, moisture is water you paid for. Both belong on the analysis certificate for the shipped lot.
- CTC activity
- Carbon tetrachloride adsorption, used for gas phase work where the iodine number is a poor guide to performance.
How it is packed.
- Sacks and big bags
- Paper or laminated sacks for granular grades, bulk bags for volume. The packaging has to keep moisture out, because a wet carbon has already adsorbed something.
- Fill by weight
- Low bulk density means a container fills by volume well before it reaches its weight limit. Plan loading in cubic metres.
- Pre-use adsorption
- Activated carbon takes up whatever is around it, including solvent vapour in a shared warehouse. Sealed packaging and clean storage are part of the specification.

- Certificate of analysis
- Iodine number, hardness, mesh, ash and moisture on the shipped lot. This is the document the product is actually bought on.
- Safety data sheet
- Required by most industrial buyers, and activated carbon has genuine handling hazards including oxygen depletion in a confined space.1
- REACH registration
- For European buyers the obligation sits with the importer or an appointed representative rather than with the Indonesian producer.1
- Certificate of origin
- Which form applies depends on the destination and the preference scheme in force with Indonesia.
Questions buyers ask.
How is this different from charcoal briquettes?
They start from the same coconut shell and end up in different industries. Briquettes are a fuel, graded on ash content and burn time and sold to shisha and barbecue markets. Activated carbon is an adsorbent, graded on iodine number and hardness and sold to water treatment, gold recovery and gas plants. Ordering one when you meant the other is a common and expensive mistake.
Is a higher iodine number always better?
No, and treating it that way is how buyers overpay. Iodine number reflects micropore volume, which suits small molecules. If your target molecule is large, a carbon with a high iodine number may adsorb less of it than a cheaper grade with the right pore distribution. Describe the application and let the supplier propose the grade.
Why does hardness matter so much?
Because a column gets backwashed repeatedly and soft carbon turns to fines, which are lost and which foul the bed. The purchase price is a small part of the total cost of running a filter, and attrition losses are a large one.
