Coconut shell or hardwood charcoal.
Coconut shell charcoal burns long and clean with low ash, which is why the shisha trade is built on it. Hardwood charcoal lights faster, burns hotter and suits grilling. The commercially important difference is that hardwood carries timber legality paperwork and coconut shell, being an agricultural by-product, does not.

- Coconut shell. It is a genuine advantage of the product and it is rarely mentioned.
- You are buying for industrial filtration
- Neither, as a fuel. That is activated carbon, a different product from the same shell.
Questions buyers ask.
Why is coconut charcoal more expensive?
Because it takes more work. Shell has to be collected, carbonised, ground, bound and pressed into a shape, then dried. Hardwood lump is closer to a single-step product. The premium buys low ash and a long even burn, and if the customer is grilling they are paying for properties they do not need.
Does hardwood charcoal really need timber documents?
It is a wood product, so Indonesia's legality system applies, and from December 2026 European buyers need the deforestation due diligence as well. This is worth confirming with your supplier early, because a producer used to selling domestically may never have needed the paperwork.
What should be in the specification?
For coconut shell: ash, moisture, fixed carbon, burn time, cube dimensions and binder. For hardwood: species, moisture, ash, size distribution and dust. Both benefit from a retained sample, because charcoal is easy to describe and hard to compare from a photograph.
