JAS organic
Japan operates its own organic standard, and food sold there as organic has to meet it. Certification under European or American organic rules does not automatically transfer, so a producer selling organic to several markets usually holds more than one certification.
The essentials.
- A national standard
- Japanese Agricultural Standards define organic for the Japanese market, and the claim is regulated rather than voluntary.1
- Certification by a recognised body
- Registered certifying bodies assess against the standard, and the certification attaches to the operator and the scope.
- Equivalence arrangements exist and are specific
- Where an arrangement recognises another system, it covers defined categories and conditions rather than everything.
- It is separate from import notification
- Every food import into Japan is notified to the health ministry regardless of any organic claim.1
Who asks for it.
Only these markets require it. Shipping the same goods anywhere else, the question does not arise.
What it does not cover.
Your EU or US certificate may not be enough
Check the current arrangement for your product category rather than assuming reciprocity. This is where organic shipments to Japan fail.
It says nothing about quality
Organic addresses how the crop was grown. Grade, moisture, defect count and flavour are separate and unaffected.
Conversion cannot be shortcut
Land takes years to convert, so supply cannot respond quickly to a new Japanese customer however good the price is.
Questions buyers ask.
Does my EU organic certificate work in Japan?
Not automatically. Equivalence arrangements exist, they are specific to categories and conditions, and they change. Confirm the current position for your product before promising a Japanese buyer an organic claim.
Which Indonesian products have JAS certification?
Coffee most readily, because the Gayo co-operatives in Aceh have long-established certification infrastructure. Outside coffee it is patchier and a producer who has never been certified cannot become so in time for your order.
Is organic worth it for Japan?
It opens a specific segment and it is not a general requirement. Most Indonesian product entering Japan is conventional, and the demanding part of that market is consistency rather than certification.
Where this comes up.
Indonesian coffee
Arabica and robusta origins, wet-hulling, how the national standard grades a lot, packing, and the documents a buyer needs including EUDR.
Indonesian coconut sugar
Coconut sugar and palm sugar are different products sold under overlapping names. What separates them, and the adulteration question that follows.
Indonesian virgin coconut oil
Three products get sold as coconut oil and only one is virgin. What the APCC standard defines, and how to tell them apart before you pay.
Indonesian cocoa beans
Why fermentation decides the price, what the national grade does not cover, and the documents an Indonesian cocoa shipment needs including EUDR.
Export documents, by category
Four categories, four different sets of paperwork and almost no overlap. Built from the reference pages, so it cannot fall behind what is published.
