Essential oils & personal care

Indonesian moringa

Moringa oleifera grows readily across the drier Indonesian islands, where it is known as kelor. The traded products are dried leaf powder, whole dried leaf and the seed and its oil, and the property that separates a good lot from a poor one is how the leaf was dried.

How it leaves the country.

Leaf powder
Dried and milled leaf, the volume product. Sold on colour, particle size and microbiology, and the colour is a record of the drying.
Whole dried leaf
For tea and for buyers who mill themselves. Harder to adulterate than powder and bulkier to ship.
Seed
Whole or shelled, for pressing and for water treatment applications. A separate trade from the leaf.
Seed oil
Cold pressed, sold as ben oil into cosmetics. Its own specification and its own buyers.

How it is graded.

No standard exists. What separates lots is drying, and the four points below are what a buyer specifies instead of a grade name.

Shade dried against sun dried
Shade or low-temperature drying keeps the leaf green. Sun drying at high temperature turns it olive and then brown, and no processing afterwards reverses it.
Colour is the visible proxy
Bright green powder is the premium and it reflects handling rather than variety. Dull powder is not unsafe, it is worth less.
Microbiology
A leaf dried in the open air and milled. The plant hygiene decides this figure, and buyers in food markets test it on every lot.
Stems and foreign matter
Cheaper powder carries more stem, which dilutes the product and shows in the colour. Specify leaf only if that is what you mean.
Heavy metals
A leaf crop takes up what is in the soil. Destination limits apply and the test belongs on the shipped lot.

How it is packed.

Barrier bags in cartons
Powder takes up moisture and loses colour in light. Foil or laminate liners are doing real work here.
Light and bulky
A container fills by volume long before it reaches its weight limit. Plan the order in cubic metres.
Heat in transit
Colour degrades with heat over a long voyage. Stowage away from the doors is worth specifying.

Where it grows.

  • East Nusa Tenggara

    Nusa Tenggara

Dry eastern islands where the tree grows readily and the leaf is a traditional food.

  • East Java

    Java

Cultivation and drying with processing capacity and good container access.

  • South Sulawesi

    Sulawesi

Producing areas with drying and milling for the export trade.

Documentation, where applicable.

Certificate of analysis
Moisture, particle size, microbiology and heavy metals on the shipped lot.
Phytosanitary certificate
A plant product, issued against the destination's plant health requirements.1
HACCP plan
Open-air drying and milling, so the documented system is what a food buyer asks for first.2
Certificate of origin
Which form applies depends on the destination and the preference scheme in force with Indonesia.

What a shipment needs depends on the product, the producer and the market it is going to. We map the documents against your destination before anyone quotes a price.

Questions buyers ask.

Why is some moringa powder brown?

It was dried in the sun at high temperature, or dried slowly in humid air. The colour is a record of the handling and it cannot be corrected afterwards. Bright green powder costs more because shade drying takes longer and needs more space.

What can I claim on the label?

Whatever your own market's rules permit, and considerably less than the internet suggests. Health claims on foods are regulated in every serious market and the comparative nutrient claims circulating about this plant are marketing rather than sourced fact. Take the wording to your own regulatory advisor before printing anything.

Is Indonesian moringa different from Indian?

Same species, and what differs is drying practice and scale. India produces far more. Indonesia's dry eastern islands grow it well, and for a buyer the decision is about the processor rather than the country.

What does your service cost?

Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.

Tell us what you need.

Give us the specification and the destination port. We come back with producer options and an indicative price. Our fee is 5 % of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory.

One line is enough to start. The more exact you are, the faster the answer comes back.
