Essential oils & personal care

Indonesian candles and home fragrance

Bali and Java produce candles, reed diffusers and room sprays, often using Indonesian essential oils and local vessels. As finished consumer goods they carry product safety obligations in your own market, and the transport question is decided by the flash point of what is inside.

How it leaves the country.

Candles
Soy, coconut or paraffin wax in ceramic, glass, concrete or coconut shell vessels. The vessel is frequently the reason the product sells.
Reed diffusers
A fragrance base with reeds, in a vessel. Liquid and often flammable, which decides how it can travel.
Room sprays and mists
Alcohol-based usually, which brings classification and sometimes customs consequences.
Incense and dried botanicals
A traditional Indonesian trade, with plant health rather than chemical questions attached.

How it is graded.

Consumer goods rather than materials, so the specification covers safety, performance and appearance together. Five points decide whether a product can be sold.

Safety testing
Candles have recognised safety standards covering flame height, stability and end of burn. A retailer will ask for test evidence and a workshop may never have commissioned any.
Flash point decides transport
Diffuser bases and sprays are frequently classified as dangerous goods, which changes packing, declarations and which carriers will take them.1
Fragrance compliance
Allergen declaration and restricted substances apply in several markets, and the fragrance house rather than the candle maker holds that data.
Vessel and packaging
Ceramic and glass break, and the packing decides survival. This is where the claims come from on this category.
Consistency of fill and scent
Hand-poured production varies. Specify a tolerance and order from one run, as with any Indonesian hand work.

How it is packed.

Individually boxed, then cartoned
Fragile vessels and liquid contents. Drop testing the retail pack is worth doing before a first container.
Heat in transit
Wax softens and deforms in a hot container, and a candle that arrived misshapen is unsellable. Stowage matters.
Dangerous goods where classified
Declaration, approved packaging and a carrier who accepts the class. Establish it before promising a delivery date.1

Where it grows.

  • Bali

    Bali

The centre of the trade, with design-led workshops close to the hospitality market that buys locally as well as exporting.

  • Yogyakarta

    Java

Ceramic and craft vessels made locally, which is why some candle production sits here.

  • East Java

    Java

Manufacturing and consolidation with the best container access in the country.

Documentation, where applicable.

Safety data sheet
For anything liquid or fragranced, and it is what determines the transport classification.1
Dangerous goods declaration
Where the flash point brings the product into scope, prepared by somebody trained to prepare it.
EU general product safety
Consumer goods entering the EU need a responsible operator established there plus technical documentation.2
Certificate of origin
Which form applies depends on the destination and the preference scheme in force with Indonesia.

What a shipment needs depends on the product, the producer and the market it is going to. We map the documents against your destination before anyone quotes a price.

Questions buyers ask.

Can a Bali workshop meet European product safety rules?

The construction usually can and the documentation usually does not exist, because nobody asked before. Testing and a technical file are arrangeable and they take time and money, and that conversation belongs before the first order rather than after a retailer asks.

Why can I not air freight diffusers?

Flash point. Many fragrance bases are classified as dangerous goods, and the air regime is stricter than the sea one. It is a process rather than a prohibition, and it is discovered late by brands sending their first samples.

Who is responsible for the product in Europe?

An economic operator established in the Union, which for a direct importer is you. An Indonesian workshop cannot fill the role, and marketplaces now ask for those details before listing.

What does your service cost?

Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.

Tell us what you need.

Give us the specification and the destination port. We come back with producer options and an indicative price. Our fee is 5 % of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory.

One line is enough to start. The more exact you are, the faster the answer comes back.
