Indonesian crude and RBD coconut oil
Crude coconut oil is pressed from copra, the sun-dried kernel, and refined into RBD oil for food manufacturing, soap and oleochemicals. It is a bulk commodity with an industrial buyer, and it shares a name with virgin coconut oil and almost nothing else.
How it leaves the country.
- Crude coconut oil
- Pressed from copra and unrefined, shipped in bulk to refineries. Contracted on free fatty acid, moisture and impurities.
- RBD coconut oil
- Refined, bleached and deodorised. Neutral by design, and the form food and cosmetic manufacturers actually use.
- Fractionated
- Split into fractions for specific melting behaviour, including the medium-chain fractions sold separately.
- Copra meal
- What remains after pressing, sold as animal feed. Low value per tonne and shipped in volume.
How it is graded.
Contracted against measured properties rather than graded. The copra behind it decides most of them, which is why the chain matters more than the pressing.
- Free fatty acid
- Rises with poor copra and poor storage. The first figure a refinery looks at and the one that most often causes a claim.
- Copra quality carries through
- Badly dried copra brings mould toxins into the crude oil, and refining does not remove everything. This is the reason to care where the copra came from.1
- Moisture and impurities
- Water and solids you paid freight on, and both affect refining yield.
- Colour and contaminants
- For refined grades, colour after bleaching plus whatever contaminants your market limits in edible oils.
- Previous cargo, on bulk
- For edible use the tanks have a documented cleaning and previous cargo history. Ask for it before loading rather than after.
How it is packed.
- Bulk parcels
- Shipped in parcel tanker tanks, heated for discharge. This is how volume oil moves and it sets a floor on order size.
- Flexitanks and drums
- Smaller quantities in a flexitank inside a container, or drums for speciality fractions. Both cost more per tonne.
- Temperature
- Coconut oil is solid at cool temperatures and needs heating to discharge. Plan for it rather than discovering it at the terminal.

- Certificate of analysis
- Free fatty acid, moisture, impurities and, for refined grades, colour and the contaminants your market limits.
- Health certificate
- Where the destination requires one for an edible oil, issued against its requirements.
- Bill of lading
- For a bulk parcel this travels with a tank cleaning record and a previous cargo declaration.
- Certificate of origin
- Which form applies depends on the destination and the preference scheme in force with Indonesia.
Questions buyers ask.
Is RBD coconut oil worse than virgin?
It is a different product for a different job. Refining removes the aroma, which is a defect in a soap or a food ingredient and the entire point in a retail virgin oil. Paying virgin prices for RBD is an error, and so is paying for aroma you will spend money removing.
Why does copra quality matter if the oil is refined?
Because mould toxins from badly dried copra carry into the crude oil and refining does not remove all of them. It is the reason a refinery cares where the copra came from rather than only about the oil specification.
Can I buy less than a bulk parcel?
Yes, in flexitanks or drums, and it costs more per tonne. The economics of commodity oils are built around parcel tankers, so a container-sized order is priced as an exception. Decide the volume before comparing quotations.
