Coir geotextile
Coir geotextile is erosion control material woven or bound from coconut husk fibre. It holds soil while vegetation establishes and then breaks down. Because it is specified into engineering work, it is bought against numbers rather than against a sample.
How it leaves the country.
- Woven netting
- Open mesh laid over slopes and channels. Specified by mesh opening and by weight per unit area.
- Erosion control blankets
- Fibre held between netting layers, giving more cover than open mesh. Used where the slope or the rainfall is harder.
- Coir logs and rolls
- Compressed fibre in netting, staked along banks and channels for shoreline and streambank work.
- Coir pots and discs
- A separate horticultural trade from the same fibre, sold to nurseries rather than to contractors.
How it is graded.
Bought against a specification written by an engineer or a landscape architect. Everything here is a number, and a supplier who cannot produce test data is not a supplier for this trade.
- Weight per unit area
- The primary specification. It drives cover, strength and cost, and it is what a drawing calls out.
- Mesh opening
- How much soil the netting holds and how easily plants grow through it. Specified in millimetres rather than described.
- Tensile strength
- Wet and dry. It has to survive installation and the first storm, and both figures come from testing rather than from a brochure.
- Design life
- Coir breaks down, which is the point. How long it lasts before it does is part of the design, and it varies with the product and the site.
- Fibre type
- Brown fibre from mature husk is what geotextile uses. White fibre from immature husk behaves differently and belongs in other products.
- Chemical treatment
- Whether anything was applied. For work near watercourses this can be the question that decides whether the material is permitted at all.
How it is packed.
- Rolls on cores
- Wrapped and labelled with the roll dimensions and the weight. Roll size is set by what a site crew can handle.
- Volume, not weight
- Rolled netting is bulky and light, so a container fills long before it weighs out. Freight per unit is high for this reason.
- Moisture
- Natural fibre absorbs water and rolls loaded damp arrive heavier, mouldy and weaker. Dry storage before loading is a real requirement.
- Site marking
- Contractors need the specification legible on the roll, because material arrives on a site with nobody holding the paperwork.

- Certificate of analysis
- Weight per unit area, mesh, tensile strength and moisture on the shipped lot, tested rather than quoted.
- Phytosanitary certificate
- A plant fibre product, so plant health applies and the destination may require fumigation.1
- Fumigation certificate
- Where the destination or the carrier requires treatment, issued against the consignment.
- Certificate of origin
- Which form applies depends on the destination and the preference scheme in force with Indonesia.
Questions buyers ask.
How long does coir geotextile last?
It is designed to break down, and how long depends on the product, the climate and the site. Match the design life to how long the vegetation needs to establish, which is a question for the designer rather than the supplier.
Can I specify it like a synthetic geotextile?
You specify the same kinds of properties and the material behaves differently, because it is natural fibre and it degrades on purpose. Ask for test data on the actual product rather than assuming a synthetic equivalence.
Why is the freight so high?
Because rolled netting is mostly air. A container fills long before it reaches its weight limit, so cost per square metre delivered is dominated by volume rather than by the material.
Is it accepted near watercourses?
Frequently yes, and it depends on the jurisdiction and on whether anything was applied to the fibre. Confirm the treatment position before specifying it into work near water.
