Indonesian coconut shell charcoal briquettes

Coconut shell charcoal briquettes are made from a waste stream: the shell left after the coconut meat is taken. Indonesia is one of the main producers, mostly for shisha. The grade names sellers use have no standard behind them, so a contract has to name the analytical values instead.

How it leaves the country.

Shisha briquettes
Cubes and hexagons in fixed sizes, made to burn long, hold shape and stay clean. This is the bulk of what Indonesia ships.
Barbecue briquettes
Different geometry, different burn profile and a different buyer. Ordering one and expecting the other is a common and expensive mistake.
Raw shell charcoal
The feedstock before briquetting, bought by processors rather than by end users. A separate trade with separate specifications.

How it is graded.

This is the product where naming the grade tells you least. Super Premium, Premium and Platinum appear on every exporter's website with different values behind them, because no standard defines any of them. Contract on the numbers and the letters become shorthand.

What to name in the contract
Ash content, fixed carbon, moisture, volatile matter, calorific value, dimensions and tolerance, and the burn time you require with the test conditions it was measured under.
Ash is the one that decides price
It is what the customer sees and smells at the end of a session, and it is the parameter that separates two consignments quoted at the same grade name.
Ask for the laboratory report
On the batch that will ship, not a reference report from a previous production. Proximate analysis is inexpensive and settles the argument before it starts.

How it is packed.

Presentation
Inner boxes inside master cartons, often to a retail specification set by the buyer. Print, weight per box and box count belong in the order.
Sea carriage
Charcoal is treated as dangerous goods for sea carriage in some forms and by some carriers. Settle the classification with the line before you book, because discovering it at the terminal costs weeks.

Where it grows.

  • Central and East Java

    Java

The densest concentration of briquette factories, close to both the shell supply and the export ports.

  • North Sumatra

    Sumatra

Coconut country feeding both shell charcoal and briquetting capacity.

  • Sulawesi

    Sulawesi

Shell supply and a smaller processing base, usually feeding factories elsewhere.

Choosing between this and something else.

Documentation, where applicable.

Certificate of analysis
Proximate analysis on the shipped batch: ash, fixed carbon, moisture and volatile matter, against the figures in the contract.
Safety data sheet
Needed by the carrier and by whoever handles the goods downstream, and the basis for how the consignment is classified in transit.
Certificate of origin
Which form applies depends on the destination and on the preference scheme in force between it and Indonesia.

What a shipment needs depends on the product, the producer and the market it is going to. We map the documents against your destination before anyone quotes a price.

Questions buyers ask.

What does Super Premium actually mean?

Whatever the seller using it says it means. There is no standard behind the term, and two exporters will apply it to consignments with materially different ash content. Ask for the numbers and treat the name as marketing.

Is coconut charcoal covered by EUDR?

Coconut is not one of the seven commodities the regulation lists, so the product itself sits outside it. That is worth confirming for any derived article you buy, because scope follows the customs classification rather than the common name.

Why do prices vary so widely for the same grade?

Because the grade is not a thing. Ash content, fixed carbon and moisture move independently, and a consignment cheap on one is usually paying for it on another. Compare quotations on the analysis, not on the label.

What does your service cost?

Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.

Tell us what you need.

Give us the specification and the destination port. We come back with producer options and an indicative price. Our fee is 5 % of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory.

One line is enough to start. The more exact you are, the faster the answer comes back.
