Indonesian coco peat and coir

Coco peat is the pith left when coconut husk is processed for fibre, compressed into blocks and used as a growing substrate. Indonesia has the husk supply to produce it at scale. The property that decides whether a consignment is usable is salt content, and that is set by how thoroughly the material was washed.

How it leaves the country.

Blocks and bricks
Compressed to a fraction of their expanded volume, which is what makes the material economic to ship. Sold by block weight and expansion ratio.
Grow bags and slabs
Pressed to a finished shape for horticultural production lines, usually wrapped and ready to plant into.
Coir fibre
The long fibre separated from the pith, used for mats, ropes, brushes and erosion control. A separate trade with separate buyers.
Chips and husk chunks
Coarser fractions blended into a substrate to open its structure and hold air. Ordered as a proportion of the mix.

How it is graded.

Growing media is bought on measured properties. The specification below is what separates a usable consignment from an expensive block of salt.

Electrical conductivity
The measure of soluble salts. Coconut husk carries sodium and potassium naturally, and washing is what removes them. Name your maximum in the contract.
Washed, buffered and unwashed
Three different products at three prices. Buffered material has been treated with a calcium solution to displace sodium held on the exchange sites, which plain washing does not reach.
Particle size and fibre content
The pith to fibre ratio decides water holding and air porosity. A substrate for propagation and one for long-season fruit are not the same blend.
Expansion ratio
How many litres a block yields when wetted. It is what you are actually buying, so it belongs in the contract alongside the block weight.
Moisture at loading
You pay freight on water. A block loaded wet costs more per usable litre and arrives heavier than the packing list says it should.

How it is packed.

Palletised blocks
Stacked and strapped, loaded to fill the container by volume. Compression is the entire economics of the product.
Wrapped for moisture
Blocks take up humidity in transit and can arrive soft and mouldy on a long tropical routing. Wrapping and stowage belong in the order.
Fumigation and pallets
Wooden pallets under the load need the heat treatment mark, and that is checked at arrival independently of the cargo itself.1

Questions buyers ask.

Why does salt content matter so much?

Because the substrate sits against the roots for a whole season. Coconut husk holds sodium and potassium naturally, and material that was rinsed quickly rather than washed properly will release them into the root zone. The damage shows up weeks after planting, by which time the consignment is long since paid for.

What is buffering, and do I need it?

Washing removes salts held in the water. Buffering treats the material with a calcium solution to displace sodium held on the exchange sites, which washing alone leaves behind. Growers running long crops on high-value production generally specify buffered material. For short propagation cycles, washed is often enough.

How do I compare prices between suppliers?

Per expanded litre, with the EC specification attached. A price per block means nothing until you know the expansion ratio and the salt level, and those two are exactly what varies between an inexpensive offer and a usable one.
