Indonesian bamboo charcoal

Bamboo charcoal is carbonised bamboo, sold mainly into air purification bags, deodorising products and consumer goods rather than as fuel or as industrial filtration media. It is a distinct product from coconut shell activated carbon and it is often marketed as though it were the same thing.

How it leaves the country.

Whole or split pieces
For air purification bags and decorative use. The visible form, sold on piece size and appearance.
Granular
Crushed and screened, for filling products and for some filtration uses.
Powder
Milled, used in cosmetics, soaps and consumer products. Particle size is the specification.
Activated
Steam activated to open the pore structure, which makes it a genuine adsorbent rather than a decorative one.

How it is graded.

There is no standard. The decisive question is whether it was activated, because that separates a functional adsorbent from a carbonised stick.

Activated or not
Carbonised bamboo has some porosity. Steam activation opens it properly. Products sold on adsorption claims should say which, and many do not.
Carbonisation temperature
Higher temperatures give more carbon and more porosity. It is a process variable that suppliers rarely volunteer.
Ash and moisture
Ash is inert weight and moisture is water you paid freight on. Both belong on the analysis.
Bamboo species and age
Different species and maturities carbonise differently. It is worth naming where consistency matters.
Dust
The recurring complaint on consumer products. Washed and screened material costs more and generates fewer returns.

How it is packed.

Bags and cartons
Light and dusty. Sealed packaging protects the product and the rest of the container from the dust.
Volume rather than weight
A container fills by space long before it reaches the weight limit.
Moisture
Charcoal takes up moisture from the air, which is both a weight and a performance question on a tropical routing.

Where it grows.

  • West Java

    Java

Bamboo growing and carbonisation with good access to Jakarta.

  • Central Java

    Java

Processing alongside the wider bamboo and craft trades.

  • Bali

    Bali

Consumer product manufacturing using bamboo charcoal, close to the design and hospitality market.

Choosing between this and something else.

Documentation, where applicable.

Certificate of analysis
Moisture, ash, and where the product is sold on adsorption, the relevant activity measure on the shipped lot.
Phytosanitary certificate
A plant product, and destinations apply their own requirements to carbonised plant material.1
Safety data sheet
Required by many industrial and retail buyers, and carbon dust has genuine handling considerations.
Certificate of origin
Which form applies depends on the destination and the preference scheme in force with Indonesia.

What a shipment needs depends on the product, the producer and the market it is going to. We map the documents against your destination before anyone quotes a price.

Questions buyers ask.

Does bamboo charcoal purify air?

Carbon adsorbs some compounds, and how much depends entirely on whether the material was activated and on the pore structure. Claims about air purification are exactly the kind regulators now test, so establish what your product actually does before printing anything.

Is it the same as activated carbon?

Only if it was activated, and much bamboo charcoal on the consumer market is not. Coconut shell activated carbon is the industrial standard for adsorption, and bamboo is largely a consumer and decorative product.

Does it carry timber documents?

Bamboo is a grass rather than a tree, which puts it outside timber legality systems in most cases. Destination plant health rules still apply to carbonised plant material, and the position is worth confirming per market.

What does your service cost?

Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.

Tell us what you need.

Give us the specification and the destination port. We come back with producer options and an indicative price. Our fee is 5 % of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory.

One line is enough to start. The more exact you are, the faster the answer comes back.
