Lampung robusta

Lampung, at the southern end of Sumatra, is the centre of Indonesian robusta. This is the volume coffee that goes into instant production and into blends, and it is registered as a geographical indication under its own name. The same province holds a separate registration for black pepper.

A protected name.

Kopi Robusta Lampung

IG.00.2013.0000031

Registered for Lampung province. Lada Hitam Lampung, the black pepper, is registered separately under IG.00.2014.000013.

What makes it different.

A different species
Robusta rather than arabica, so the comparison with Gayo or Toraja is not a quality ranking. It is a different plant grown for a different purpose at a different altitude.
Dry processed
Cherries are dried whole before hulling, which is what a volume robusta operation does. It is simple, it is cheap, and it puts the emphasis on how well the drying was managed.
Built for instant and blending
The buyers are soluble coffee manufacturers and blenders, so the contract terms are defect counts, screen size and moisture instead of cup scores.
Two protected products from one province
Coffee and black pepper both carry registrations here, and the same collectors and exporters often handle both.

Getting it out.

Panjang is the port
Lampung has its own container port at Panjang, and Bandar Lampung sits alongside it. Coffee also moves across to Java by ferry.
Volume changes the economics
This is a full-container-load origin. The freight and handling assumptions behind a speciality arabica lot do not apply.

Questions buyers ask.

Is robusta worse than arabica?

It is a different species bought for different reasons. Robusta carries more caffeine, gives more body and crema, and costs less, which is why it dominates instant coffee and appears in espresso blends. Judging Lampung against Gayo on cup score is measuring the wrong thing.

What should a Lampung contract specify?

Screen size, defect count, moisture and whether the lot is machine sorted. This is a commodity trade with objective terms, and vague quality language is what causes disputes at arrival.

Can I buy coffee and pepper together from here?

Both are produced in the province and both hold registrations, and exporters often deal in both. Whether they can travel in one container depends on the goods and on the destination's rules, which is a question worth asking before you plan the shipment rather than after.

What does your service cost?

Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.
