Comparison
Arabica or robusta from Indonesia.
Indonesia grows both, and the split is geographic. Robusta is the volume crop from lower ground, led by Lampung. Arabica comes from the highlands and carries the named origins, Gayo, Kintamani, Toraja and Java Preanger among them. The choice is about what you are making before it is about quality.
Side by side.
| Criterion | Arabica | Robusta |
|---|---|---|
| Where it grows | Highlands, and in Indonesia that means Aceh, Bali, Sulawesi, West Java and pockets elsewhere. | Lower ground, with Lampung in southern Sumatra as the centre of the trade. |
| Cup | Acidity and aroma, and in Sumatra a heavy body from wet hulling that is unusual for the species. | Heavier, flatter, more bitter, with the crema and body espresso blends are bought for. |
| Processing | Wet hulled in Sumatra and Sulawesi, washed in Bali and Java. The method changes the cup more than the region does. | Mostly dry processed. Simple, cheap, and the drying is where quality is decided. |
| How it is contracted | Grade and defect count, plus a cup score for speciality lots, plus the mill. | Grade, screen size, defect count and moisture. Objective terms, no cupping. |
| Registered origins1 | Gayo, Kintamani, Toraja and Java Preanger all hold geographical indications, so an origin claim can be checked. | Lampung and Temanggung are registered, which is unusual for robusta anywhere. |
| Volumes and lot size | Lot-scale. Speciality buyers work in bags rather than containers, and the good lots go early. | Container-scale. The economics assume a full load. |
| Deforestation regulation2 | Inside it. Smallholder structure makes plot data the hard part on both species. | Inside it equally. Nothing about the species changes the obligation. |
Which to choose.
- You are roasting for filter or single origin
- Arabica, on a registered origin, with the mill and process named.
- You are blending for espresso and want body and crema
- Robusta, and consider Temanggung if you want a robusta worth naming.
- You are making instant coffee
- Robusta at container scale. Arabica would be money burned.
- You want the Sumatran profile specifically
- Arabica, wet hulled, from Gayo. That flavour is a process rather than a species.
Questions buyers ask.
Is Indonesian arabica always wet hulled?
No, and assuming so is a common error. Sumatra and Sulawesi mostly are, which is where the heavy low-acid profile comes from. Kintamani in Bali and Java Preanger are washed and taste nothing like it. Naming the process in the contract matters more than naming the island.
Can I buy both from one supplier?
Some exporters handle both and the growing regions are far apart, so the material comes from different chains regardless. If quality matters on the arabica, buy it from somebody close to that mill rather than from a company that also sells robusta.
Which is better value from Indonesia?
Robusta, if you need the properties robusta has, because Indonesia is a genuinely large and competitive supplier. Arabica from Indonesia competes on character and on verifiable origin rather than on price, and it is priced against speciality coffee everywhere else.
