Comparison
Indonesian or Vietnamese robusta.
Vietnamese robusta is the volume benchmark: uniform, dry processed, and traded to a well-understood specification. Indonesian robusta is more variable and carries more character, partly because much of it comes from smallholdings feeding many small mills. Buyers choose Vietnam for consistency and Indonesia for profile and for origin names.
Side by side.
| Criterion | Indonesia | Vietnam |
|---|---|---|
| Structure of supply | Smallholder farms feeding a great many small collectors and mills, which is where the variability comes from. | Also smallholder-grown and far more consolidated downstream, which is where the uniformity comes from. |
| Consistency between lots | Lower. Two lots of the same grade from different mills can differ noticeably. | Higher. This is the origin's main commercial argument and the reason it dominates instant coffee. |
| Cup character | More character and more variation, which some blenders want and others treat as a risk. | Clean and neutral by design, which is what a soluble manufacturer is buying. |
| Origin names1 | Lampung and Temanggung are registered geographical indications, so an origin claim can be checked. | Origin marketing exists and the registered-name infrastructure is not comparable. |
| The deforestation regulation2 | Coffee is inside it, and Indonesian smallholder structure makes plot geolocation genuinely hard work. | Coffee is inside it there too. The consolidation downstream helps, and the underlying farms are still small. |
| What to specify | Grade, defect count, screen size, moisture, and the mill. Naming the mill matters more here than the province. | Grade, screen and moisture. The mill matters less because the range is narrower. |
Which to choose.
- You are making soluble coffee at volume
- Vietnam, for consistency. Nothing else in the comparison outweighs it.
- You want a robusta with an origin story a customer can verify
- Indonesia, on a registered name, with the mill written into the contract.
- You are blending for espresso and want body with character
- Indonesia is worth cupping. Buy on the sample rather than on the origin.
- You need arabica as well from the same trip
- Indonesia. Gayo, Kintamani, Toraja and Java Preanger are all arabica origins with their own registrations.
Questions buyers ask.
Is Indonesian robusta worse than Vietnamese?
It is less uniform, which for a soluble manufacturer is the same thing as worse and for a speciality roaster is not. The two origins are optimised for different buyers. Judging Indonesia on Vietnam's criteria will always produce the same answer, and it is not a useful one if you came for character.
Which is easier to buy in small volumes?
Indonesia, generally, because the supply chain runs through many smaller mills that are used to selling lot quantities. Vietnamese robusta is set up around large uniform parcels, which is exactly the property that makes it good for its main buyers.
Does the EU deforestation regulation change the comparison?
It raises the cost of traceability on both, and it raises it more where the chain has more hands in it. That is a real argument for buying Indonesian coffee through somebody who can collect plot data at the mill rather than hoping it appears at the port.
