Java Preanger tea

Java Preanger tea holds its own geographical indication on the same West Java highlands that produce the registered coffee. Much of it comes from large estates, several state-owned, which makes it structurally unlike the smallholder origins elsewhere in Indonesian agriculture.

A protected name.

Teh Java Preanger

IG.00.2015.0000011

Registered for West Java. The same highlands hold a separate registration for Java Preanger arabica coffee.

What makes it different.

Estate rather than smallholder
Large plantations with their own factories, which makes traceability and consistency far easier here than in most Indonesian agriculture.
Orthodox and CTC
Two manufacturing methods producing different teas from the same leaf. Orthodox for whole-leaf grades, CTC for volume and blending. Name which on the order.
Highland altitude
The Preanger highlands rise well above the surrounding lowland, which is what makes tea and coffee both possible on the same ground.
A long colonial history
Planted for export under Dutch administration, which is why the estate structure and the factories exist at all.

Getting it out.

The shortest inland leg in Indonesia
Tanjung Priok is a few hours away with daily sailings to most markets, which is a genuine advantage over eastern origins.
Moisture and packing
Tea takes up moisture and odour readily. Foil-lined sacks and clean stowage matter more here than the grade name.

Questions buyers ask.

How does Java tea compare with Indian or Sri Lankan?

It is a smaller trade with less name recognition, and the estate structure and altitude are genuinely comparable. Buyers come here for a registered origin, for good traceability and often because they are already sourcing Indonesian coffee from the same highlands.

Orthodox or CTC?

Orthodox where the leaf grade and the character matter, CTC where the tea goes into blends and bags at volume. They are different products from the same leaf, and the price and the buyer differ accordingly.

Can I buy tea and coffee from the same trip?

Yes, and it is one of the reasons buyers come to this region. Both hold registrations, both are grown on the same highlands, and the logistics are the same short road leg to Jakarta.

What does your service cost?

Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.
