Orthodox manufacture rolls the leaf and keeps it largely intact, giving whole-leaf grades with nuance. CTC cuts, tears and curls it into uniform particles that brew fast and strong. Java produces both, and they are different products rather than quality tiers.

Is orthodox better?
It is more nuanced and more variable, which suits a speciality buyer and frustrates a blender who needs the same liquor every time. Neither is better in the abstract.
Does Indonesia make good orthodox tea?
The Java estates have the altitude, the factories and a registered origin. It is a small trade with less name recognition than Indian or Sri Lankan tea, and buyers who come here usually come for the traceability and the origin claim.
What should I specify?
Method, grade, and the liquor characteristics you actually need. Then moisture and packing, because tea absorbs moisture and odour readily on a tropical voyage.
