Organic certification
Organic is a regulated claim rather than a voluntary label, and the regulation is the destination's. The European Union and the United States run separate systems with separate approved control bodies, so an Indonesian producer selling to both usually holds two certifications and two sets of records.
The essentials.
- The European system
- Governed by the EU organic regulation, with imports admitted through recognised control bodies and accompanied by an electronic certificate of inspection.1
- The American system
- The National Organic Program, run by the Department of Agriculture, with its own accredited certifiers and its own standards.2
- Certification is of the operator
- The farm, the processor and the exporter are each inspected and certified for the scope of what they handle.2
- Conversion takes years
- Land does not become organic on application. There is a conversion period during which the crop cannot be sold with the claim, which is why supply cannot respond quickly to demand.1
Who asks for it.
No export shipment needs this. It is an Indonesian domestic registration for selling inside the country, and it has no bearing on a container leaving it. Suppliers quote it as a credential often enough that it is worth knowing what it does not buy you.
What it does not cover.
One certificate rarely covers both markets
The systems are separate and the equivalence arrangements between them have changed over time. Check the scope on the certificate against the market you are shipping to instead of assuming an organic producer can supply anywhere.
It says nothing about quality
Organic addresses how the crop was grown. It makes no statement about grade, moisture, defect count or flavour, and buyers who treat it as a quality tier are surprised.
The claim travels with documents, not with goodwill
For the European Union the consignment needs its electronic certificate of inspection. Without it the goods can still enter and they cannot be sold as organic, which is usually a total loss of the premium.
Questions buyers ask.
Is organic Indonesian coffee easy to find?
Easier than for most Indonesian crops, because the Gayo co-operatives in Aceh have been certified for a long time and the structure exists there. Outside coffee it is patchier, and a producer who has never been certified cannot become so in time for your order.
Can I trust a scanned certificate?
Check it against the control body rather than the supplier. Certificates have a scope, a validity period and a named operator, and all three matter. For European imports the consignment-level certificate is issued electronically, which is a much harder thing to fake than a PDF.
What if my supplier is organic in practice but not certified?
Then the goods are not organic for labelling purposes, which is the only sense in which the word has meaning at a border. Many smallholders use no chemical inputs and cannot afford certification, and buying from them is legitimate as long as you do not make the claim.
Where this comes up.
Indonesian coffee
Arabica and robusta origins, wet-hulling, how the national standard grades a lot, packing, and the documents a buyer needs including EUDR.
Indonesian cocoa beans
Why fermentation decides the price, what the national grade does not cover, and the documents an Indonesian cocoa shipment needs including EUDR.
Indonesian coconut sugar
Coconut sugar and palm sugar are different products sold under overlapping names. What separates them, and the adulteration question that follows.
Indonesian virgin coconut oil
Three products get sold as coconut oil and only one is virgin. What the APCC standard defines, and how to tell them apart before you pay.
Indonesian cashew nuts
Indonesia mostly exports raw cashew nuts, not kernels. What outturn means, why it decides the price, and what to check if you want processed grades.
Export documents, by category
Four categories, four different sets of paperwork and almost no overlap. Built from the reference pages, so it cannot fall behind what is published.
