Essential oils & personal care

Indonesian turmeric oil

Turmeric oil is steam distilled from the rhizome and it carries the volatile fraction, principally turmerones. Curcumin is not volatile and it does not distil, so an oil bought expecting curcumin is the single most common error in this product.

How it leaves the country.

Steam distilled oil
The volatile fraction from dried or fresh rhizome. Woody and peppery rather than the colour and bitterness people associate with turmeric.
Oleoresin
Solvent extracted, carrying both the volatiles and the curcuminoids. A different product entirely and the one colour buyers usually want.
Curcumin extract
Purified curcuminoids for nutraceutical use. Not an oil at all, and a separate trade with separate specifications.
Redistilled
Rectified for consistency and colour, at a higher price, where a formulation has to reproduce exactly.

How it is graded.

Contracted against a compositional profile rather than graded. The first decision is which of the three products above you actually need.

Curcumin does not distil
It is not volatile. An oil contains almost none, and buyers wanting colour or curcuminoid content need oleoresin or extract rather than oil.
Turmerones are the profile
The compounds a flavour or fragrance buyer contracts on, measured by chromatography on the shipped lot.
Fresh or dried rhizome
Distilling fresh material gives a different profile from distilling dried. It belongs in the specification because it changes the oil.
Village distillation varies
Small non-standard stills and seasonal material, so batch variation is a feature of the origin. Redistillation is what removes it.
Adulteration
A valuable oil in small volumes, which is the usual invitation. Chromatography against a retained sample is the defence.

How it is packed.

Lined drums
Essential oils attack unlined steel and pick up iron. The lining is part of the specification.
Minimal headspace
Oxygen degrades the oil. A part-filled drum arrives worse than it left.
Dangerous goods for air
Classification follows the flash point, and air shipment needs a declaration and a carrier who accepts it.1

Where it grows.

  • Central Java

    Java

Extensive turmeric growing with distillation alongside the wider essential oil trade.

  • East Java

    Java

Growing and distilling with the best container access in the country.

  • West Java

    Java

Highland growing supplying both the dried spice and the distillation trades.

Choosing between this and something else.

Documentation, where applicable.

Certificate of analysis
Gas chromatography on the shipped lot, plus refractive index and specific gravity. The document the oil is bought on.
Safety data sheet
Required by industrial buyers and by carriers, and it decides how the drum may travel.1
REACH registration
For European buyers the obligation sits with the importer or an appointed representative.1
Certificate of origin
Which form applies depends on the destination and the preference scheme in force with Indonesia.

What a shipment needs depends on the product, the producer and the market it is going to. We map the documents against your destination before anyone quotes a price.

Questions buyers ask.

Does turmeric oil contain curcumin?

Almost none. Curcumin is not volatile so it does not come across in steam distillation. If you need curcuminoids, you need oleoresin or a purified extract, and confusing the three is the most expensive mistake on this product.

Will it colour my product?

Barely. The strong yellow colour people associate with turmeric belongs to the curcuminoids, which stay behind. An oil buyer is purchasing aroma and flavour rather than colour.

Fresh or dried rhizome?

It changes the profile, so name it. Fresh distillation is less common and gives a different oil, and a formulation built on one will notice the other.

What does your service cost?

Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.

Tell us what you need.

Give us the specification and the destination port. We come back with producer options and an indicative price. Our fee is 5 % of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory.

One line is enough to start. The more exact you are, the faster the answer comes back.
