Indonesian mangosteen

Mangosteen is Indonesia's most significant fresh fruit export, going largely to China and other Asian markets. Two things dominate: fresh fruit needs an agreed market access protocol with the destination, and the fruit carries an internal defect that no external inspection detects.

How it leaves the country.

Fresh whole fruit
The trade, graded by size and by calyx condition. Air freighted or moved in fast reefer depending on the route.
Frozen whole or arils
For processing and for markets without fresh access. A completely different specification and logistics.
Pericarp
The rind, dried, sold into extraction for the compounds it carries. A by-product trade with its own buyers.

How it is graded.

Graded by size and by external condition, and the defect that matters most is invisible from outside, which is the central commercial problem with this fruit.

Translucent flesh disorder
Internal flesh becomes translucent and hard. It cannot be seen from the outside and it is the reason buyers demand sampling by cutting rather than by inspection.
Gamboge
Yellow latex staining inside or outside the fruit, caused by damage or by rain during development. Visible externally when it is on the rind.
Calyx and stem condition
Green fresh calyx signals freshness and it is what a buyer looks at first. It browns quickly after harvest.
Rind hardness
The rind hardens with age and time in transit, and a hard rind means the fruit is difficult to open even when the flesh is fine.
Market access protocol
Fresh fruit access is negotiated between countries per commodity. Without an agreed protocol with your market, the trade does not exist however good the fruit is.

How it is packed.

Single-layer cartons
Fruit is fragile and bruising shows. Cartons hold a single layer with cushioning, which is why the freight per kilo of fruit is high.
Cold chain from harvest
Temperature and time from picking decide shelf life more than anything at destination. This is a farm and packhouse question.
Air or fast reefer
The route decides. Air preserves condition and costs; reefer works on short Asian routes and does not on long ones.

Where it grows.

  • West Java

    Java

A major producing area with packhouses and the shortest route to Jakarta for air freight.

  • West Sumatra

    Sumatra

Established growing areas supplying both fresh and processing trades.

  • Bali

    Bali

Production with direct international flights, which suits the fresh air-freighted trade.

Documentation, where applicable.

Phytosanitary certificate
Fresh fruit, so plant health is the central document and it is issued against the consignment before departure.1
GACC registration
For China, registration of the producing area and the packhouse rather than only a processor.2
Certificate of analysis
Where the destination requires residue testing, on the shipped lot.
Certificate of origin
Which form applies depends on the destination and the preference scheme in force with Indonesia.

What a shipment needs depends on the product, the producer and the market it is going to. We map the documents against your destination before anyone quotes a price.

Questions buyers ask.

Can I import Indonesian mangosteen?

Only if your country has an agreed access protocol for fresh Indonesian mangosteen, and many do not. That is the first question and it is answered by your own plant health authority rather than by an exporter. Frozen product faces a different and usually easier position.

What is translucent flesh?

An internal disorder where the flesh becomes glassy and hard. It is invisible from outside, so the only way to assess a lot is to cut a sample. Buyers who inspect externally and accept are gambling, and the gamble is the reason sampling protocols exist on this fruit.

Air or sea?

Air for long routes and premium markets, fast reefer on short Asian routes. The fruit's condition is largely decided in the hours after harvest, so a good air shipment of badly handled fruit is still bad fruit.

What does your service cost?

Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.

Tell us what you need.

Give us the specification and the destination port. We come back with producer options and an indicative price. Our fee is 5 % of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory.

One line is enough to start. The more exact you are, the faster the answer comes back.
