Essential oils & personal care
Indonesian ginger oil
Ginger oil is steam-distilled from the rhizome and carries the aroma. Oleoresin is solvent-extracted and carries the pungency as well. They are different products for different applications, and Indonesia produces both from several ginger varieties that do not smell alike.
How it leaves the country.
- Essential oil
- Steam-distilled, aromatic, used in fragrance and flavour where heat is not the point.
- Oleoresin
- Solvent-extracted, carrying the pungent compounds as well as the aroma. A food industry material with its own specification.
- Dried rhizome
- The raw material, also traded as spice in its own right and priced separately.
How it is graded.
Name the product and the variety. Indonesian ginger comes in several types with noticeably different profiles, and the distillate follows the rhizome.
- Oil or oleoresin
- Different extraction, different composition and different regulatory treatment in food use. State which one before anything else.
- Variety matters
- Local ginger types differ in size, fibre and pungency, and the oil differs with them. Name the variety in the contract.
- Contracted on
- Composition parameters your formulator names, plus colour and the physical constants, with analysis on the shipped batch.
How it is packed.
- Containers
- Filled by net weight into lined drums, kept out of light and heat.
- Sampling
- Retain samples on both sides against the shipped batch. Composition varies enough between distillations to make it worth having.
Where it grows.
Central Java
Java
The main growing belt, with distillation alongside the wider essential oil trade.
East Java
Java
Growing and processing close to the export routes.
West Sumatra
Sumatra
A separate growing base with its own varieties.
Choosing between this and something else.
Documentation, where applicable.
- Certificate of analysis
- Composition and physical constants on the batch that shipped.
- Safety data sheet
- Required downstream, and the basis for how the drum is classified in transit.
- REACH
- For the EU, the registration obligation sits with the importer or an appointed only representative.1
- Certificate of origin
- Which form applies depends on the destination and on the preference scheme in force.
Questions buyers ask.
Oil or oleoresin for a beverage?
Usually oleoresin, because the pungency is what a ginger drink is for and the distilled oil does not carry it. That is a formulation question, and the commercial point is to name which one on the order.
Does the ginger variety change the oil?
Yes, noticeably. Indonesian varieties differ in fibre and pungency and the distillate follows. If your formulation was built on one, write it into the specification.
Why does colour vary?
Rhizome age, drying and storage all move it, and so does time in the drum. Colour is a specification parameter rather than a defect, so agree the acceptable range.
What does your service cost?
Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.
Tell us what you need.
Give us the specification and the destination port. We come back with producer options and an indicative price. Our fee is 5 % of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory.
