Indonesian benzoin
Benzoin is a resin tapped from Styrax trees, known in Indonesia as kemenyan and traded internationally as Sumatra benzoin. Siam benzoin from mainland Southeast Asia is a different material with a different profile, and a formulation built on one does not accept the other.
How it leaves the country.
- Resin tears and blocks
- The raw tapped material, graded by colour, purity and how much bark travelled with it.
- Resinoid
- Solvent-extracted and standardised, which is how most of the perfumery trade buys it.
- Tincture
- An alcohol solution, used where a liquid form suits the process.
How it is graded.
Grading is a trade practice rather than a published standard. What a contract fixes is the type, the form and an approved reference sample, because the primary judgement here is olfactory.
- Sumatra or Siam
- Different Styrax species from different regions with different profiles. Naming the type is the first thing a contract has to get right.
- Purity
- Bark, dirt and adulterants travel with poorly cleaned resin. Purity is what the grade names are trying to describe.
- Contracted on
- Type, form, purity, and an approved retained sample that the shipment is matched against.
How it is packed.
- Resin
- Boxed or bagged. It softens in heat and cakes, so how it travelled matters to what arrives.
- Sampling
- Retain samples on both sides. On a material judged by smell, a retained reference is the only thing a dispute can be measured against.

- Required downstream, and the basis for how the consignment is classified in transit.

- For the EU, the registration obligation sits with the importer or an appointed only representative.1

- Where the destination requires one for a plant-derived raw material.2
Questions buyers ask.
Is Sumatra benzoin interchangeable with Siam?
Not to a perfumer. Different species, different region, different profile. A house working with one will notice the other immediately, so name the type on the order rather than writing benzoin.
Resin or resinoid?
Resinoid for most perfumery work, because it is standardised and easier to dose. Raw resin suits buyers who extract themselves or who want the material in its traditional form.
How do I check purity?
Visually on the raw resin and by analysis on the resinoid, plus a retained sample on both sides. Bark and dirt in poorly cleaned material are the usual complaint and they are visible before extraction.
What does your service cost?
Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.
