Indonesian bamboo

Bamboo is a grass, and it grows fast enough that Indonesia can cut it every few years without replanting. It leaves the country as poles, split material, woven panels and laminated board. Untreated, it is food for powder-post beetles, and that single fact decides most of what goes wrong with it.

How it leaves the country.

Poles
Whole culms, sold by diameter and length. Used structurally, for scaffolding and for hospitality interiors.
Laminated board
Strips glued into panels and boards. It behaves like an engineered timber and is bought as one, with the glue system part of the specification.
Woven and split
Matting, cladding and furniture components. Closer to the rattan trade than to the timber one in how it is made and priced.

How it is graded.

No grade table covers this. What protects a consignment is the treatment record and the moisture, and both are settled at the factory rather than argued about on arrival.

Treatment is the whole game
Untreated bamboo carries beetle larvae. Borate treatment is the usual answer, and a supplier who cannot describe their process and show the record is selling you an infestation.
Species matters
Petung is the thick-walled structural species, apus the flexible weaving one. Naming the species is not a botanical nicety, it decides what the material can do.
What to specify
Species, diameter and wall thickness, length, moisture, treatment method with the record, finish, and straightness tolerance.

How it is packed.

The moisture problem
Bamboo shipped above target splits as it dries and mould follows. A pre-loading moisture check is worth more than any certificate that arrives with the goods.
Wood packaging
Crates, pallets and dunnage are treated and marked under ISPM 15, which is a separate question from treating the bamboo itself1

Where it grows.

  • West Java

    Java

Dense growing and processing, and the closest capacity to the main export ports.

  • Central Java

    Java

Weaving and laminating clusters working alongside the furniture trade.

  • Bali

    Bali

Where the architectural bamboo work is concentrated, and where the highest specifications are met.

  • East Nusa Tenggara

    Nusa Tenggara

Growing rather than processing, feeding material to the Javanese and Balinese workshops.

Documentation, where applicable.

Treatment record
The record of how the bamboo itself was treated against insects, from the facility that did it. Ask for it by name, because it is the document that predicts whether the goods survive.
Phytosanitary certificate
Issued by Badan Karantina Indonesia. Whether it is required depends on the article and on the destination's plant health rules.2
ISPM 15 treatment mark
On the wood packaging around the goods, which is a separate requirement from treating the bamboo.1
Certificate of origin
Which form applies depends on the destination and on the preference scheme in force between it and Indonesia.

What a shipment needs depends on the product, the producer and the market it is going to. We map the documents against your destination before anyone quotes a price.

Questions buyers ask.

Why did my bamboo arrive full of holes?

Powder-post beetles, and it means the material was not treated or was treated badly. It is the single most common failure on this product, it is entirely preventable, and it is why the treatment record belongs in the order rather than in a conversation.

Is bamboo really more sustainable than timber?

It grows back in years rather than decades, which is a real advantage. What that does not settle is the glue in a laminated panel, the treatment chemistry or the freight, so the claim is worth making narrowly rather than broadly.

Can I use Indonesian bamboo structurally?

It is used that way in Indonesia and increasingly elsewhere, but structural use is an engineering question that depends on species, age at cutting, treatment and your own building rules. Get it specified by someone qualified rather than by a supplier's brochure.

What does your service cost?

Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.

Tell us what you need.

Give us the specification and the destination port. We come back with producer options and an indicative price. Our fee is 5 % of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory.

One line is enough to start. The more exact you are, the faster the answer comes back.

Optional, and the fastest way for us to reply.

We answer within one working day, from Indonesia on UTC+7. Wholesale orders from $10,000 per shipment.
