Bamboo flooring and panels

Bamboo flooring is an engineered product. Strips are laminated or compressed with adhesive, so the adhesive is a structural component and a compliance question. The bamboo species and the construction decide hardness, stability and how it behaves in a dry heated room.

How it leaves the country.

Horizontal and vertical laminated
Strips glued flat or on edge. The traditional constructions, showing the node pattern differently.
Strand woven
Shredded fibre compressed with resin under pressure. Much harder and much denser, and the resin content is higher.
Engineered with a bamboo wear layer
A bamboo face over a plywood core. More stable across humidity swings than solid construction.
Panels and worktops
The same technology in sheet form for joinery and surfaces.

How it is graded.

Specified like an engineered wood product rather than like a plant. Three things decide performance and one of them is invisible.

Adhesive and emissions
Formaldehyde emissions from the adhesive are regulated in the United States and the European Union. The certificate has to match the standard your market enforces.
Moisture content
Set for the destination climate rather than the origin one. A floor made at tropical equilibrium gaps in a heated room.
Density and hardness
Strand woven is dramatically harder than laminated. Specify the construction rather than assuming bamboo means one thing.
Bamboo maturity
Culms harvested too young give softer, less stable material. It is upstream of the factory and it shows in the finished floor.
Finish
Coating system, number of coats and wear rating. It is what the customer sees fail first.
Dimensional tolerance
Board width, thickness and squareness. Loose tolerances make a floor difficult to lay and it is the installer who discovers it.

How it is packed.

Sealed cartons on pallets
Flooring absorbs and loses moisture through the pack. Sealed packaging is part of the product specification rather than protection.
Weight
Strand woven is dense, so a container weighs out well before it fills.
Acclimatisation
Boards need time at destination conditions before laying. Tell your customer, because a floor laid straight off the container moves.
Wood packaging rules
Pallets and crates carry their own treatment and marking requirement.

Where it grows.

  • East Java

    Java

Bamboo processing with panel and flooring capability and a route through Surabaya.

  • Central Java

    Java

Established bamboo supply and manufacturing serving both domestic and export markets.

  • Bali

    Bali

Bamboo construction and craft capability, mostly at architectural rather than volume flooring scale.

Choosing between this and something else.

Documentation, where applicable.

Certificate of analysis
Formaldehyde emissions, moisture content, density and dimensional tolerance on the shipped lot.
SVLK certificate
Where the destination requires evidence of legal origin for the material and the manufacturer.1
ISPM 15 mark
On the pallet and any crate, regulated separately from the goods.2
Certificate of origin
Which form applies depends on the destination and the preference scheme in force with Indonesia.

What a shipment needs depends on the product, the producer and the market it is going to. We map the documents against your destination before anyone quotes a price.

Questions buyers ask.

Is bamboo flooring harder than oak?

Strand woven usually is, and laminated bamboo generally is not. Since both are sold as bamboo flooring, the construction rather than the material is what you specify.

Does the adhesive matter?

Considerably. It is a structural component and it is what formaldehyde emission rules regulate. Ask for the emission class against the standard enforced where you sell.

Will it gap in a heated house?

It can, if the moisture content was set for a tropical climate. Specify the moisture content for the destination and tell the installer to acclimatise the boards.

What does your service cost?

Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.

Tell us what you need.

Give us the specification and the destination port. We come back with producer options and an indicative price. Our fee is 5 % of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory.

One line is enough to start. The more exact you are, the faster the answer comes back.
