Lampung black pepper

Lampung black pepper is a registered geographical indication and a name the world trade uses almost as a grade. What decides what physically arrives is not the origin but whether you bought FAQ or ASTA, and those describe very different bags at very different prices.

A protected name.

Lada Hitam Lampung

IG.00.2014.0000131

Registered for Lampung province. The same province holds a separate registration for robusta coffee under Kopi Robusta Lampung.

What makes it different.

Picked green, dried with the skin on
That is what makes it black pepper rather than white. Muntok white pepper from Bangka is the same vine handled completely differently.2
FAQ against ASTA is the real decision
Fair Average Quality arrives as it came off the farm, with stalks, dust and light berries. Cleaned grades cost more and arrive clean. The origin does not settle this.
Smallholder vines
Grown across many small holdings feeding collectors, which is where variation and adulteration enter the chain.
Two registered crops, one province
Pepper and robusta coffee both hold registrations here, and the same exporters frequently handle both.1

Getting it out.

Panjang is on the doorstep
Lampung has its own container port, which is unusual for an Indonesian spice origin and removes a domestic leg.
Microbiology and treatment
Whole spice carries a microbiological load European buyers manage upstream. Steam treatment changes the product and the price, so decide before comparing offers.3

Questions buyers ask.

Is Lampung a grade or a place?

A place, registered as a geographical indication, which the trade uses as though it were a grade. If the origin claim matters for your labelling, buy on the registered name and ask for the evidence. If what you care about is what is in the bag, the FAQ against ASTA question matters more.

Should I buy FAQ to save money?

Only if you have cleaning capacity, because FAQ is farmgate condition and somebody has to remove the stalks, dust and stones. Buyers who order it for the price and then discover the cleaning cost have not saved anything.

Can I get coffee from the same exporter?

Frequently yes, because both crops are registered in this province and the same trading houses handle them. Whether they can share a container depends on the destination's document requirements rather than on compatibility in the box.

What does your service cost?

Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.
