FSC certification
FSC is a voluntary certification scheme covering responsible forest management and the chain of custody that follows the timber. No country requires it. Indonesian buyers meet it because their own customers ask for it, and it sits alongside the compulsory legality documents rather than replacing them.
The essentials.
- Who runs it
- The Forest Stewardship Council, an international membership organisation. It is not a government body and it issues no export permission.1
- What chain of custody means
- Certification that follows the material through every company that handles it. A break anywhere in the chain and the finished product cannot carry the claim.1
- Who holds it
- Each company in the chain holds its own certificate, so your supplier needs one even if the forest is certified.1
- Cost falls on the producer
- Audit and annual fees are borne by the certified company, which is why small Indonesian workshops often are not certified and are still entirely legitimate.
Who asks for it.
No export shipment needs this. It is an Indonesian domestic registration for selling inside the country, and it has no bearing on a container leaving it. Suppliers quote it as a credential often enough that it is worth knowing what it does not buy you.
What it does not cover.
It is not SVLK and it is not a substitute
Indonesia's own timber legality system is compulsory and it issues the document that lets wood leave the country. FSC is voluntary and issues nothing of the kind. A supplier offering FSC in place of SVLK has misunderstood which of the two is law.
It does not satisfy the EU deforestation regulation
The regulation asks for geolocation of the plots and a due diligence statement from the operator placing goods on the market. A certificate is evidence a company may use in its risk assessment and it does not discharge the obligation.
The claim belongs to the product, not the company
A certified company can sell both certified and uncertified goods. What matters is whether the specific consignment was sold with the claim on the invoice.
Questions buyers ask.
Do I need FSC to import Indonesian wood?
No government requires it. Your own customers might, and some retail chains treat it as a condition of listing. Decide whether you need the claim before you shortlist producers, because it removes a large share of the smaller Indonesian workshops from consideration.
Is uncertified Indonesian wood illegal?
No. Legality is what SVLK addresses, and it is compulsory. A workshop without FSC certification may be entirely legal and well run, and it may simply have decided that the audit costs more than the premium it could earn.
Can I claim FSC on my finished product?
Only if every company that handled the material held certification and the goods were invoiced with the claim. Buying certified timber and having it worked by an uncertified workshop breaks the chain, and the finished piece cannot carry the label.
