Wooden pallets
Pallets and wooden packaging are regulated for plant health independently of whatever they carry. A pallet without the correct treatment and mark can stop a container that is otherwise perfect, which makes this a compliance purchase as much as a timber one.
How it leaves the country.
- Standard pallets
- Made to a recognised size and construction, which matters if they enter a pooled system or an automated warehouse.
- Custom pallets
- Sized to the goods. Common in Indonesian export and it means the pallet does not fit anybody else's racking.
- Crates and cases
- Made for a specific consignment, and subject to the same treatment requirement.
- Presswood and processed
- Made from processed wood, which sits differently under the plant health rules.
How it is graded.
Construction, timber and treatment. The third one is the one that stops containers.
- Treatment and mark
- Heat treatment or an approved alternative, applied by an authorised facility, with the mark applied correctly. An incorrect or absent mark is a border problem.
- Moisture content
- Wet pallets grow mould, stain cartons and add weight. Treatment does not by itself dry the timber.
- Timber and legality
- It is a wood product, so legality documentation applies to the pallet as well as to the goods.
- Construction
- Board thickness, number of boards, nailing pattern and block or stringer design. It decides whether the pallet survives handling.
- Dimensions and tolerance
- Critical if the pallet enters automated handling at destination, where a few millimetres stops a line.
- Protruding nails and splinters
- A safety and damage issue that is entirely a quality of manufacture question.
How it is packed.
- Stacked and banded
- Pallets ship as cargo, block stacked. Damage in transit is a real cost on a low-value product.
- Weight
- Dense hardwood pallets are heavy and a container weighs out early.
- Moisture
- Loaded damp, they mould in transit and the mould transfers to whatever they later carry.
- The mark
- Legible and correctly placed. An unreadable mark is treated as an absent one.
Where it grows.
Central Java
Java
Pallet and packaging manufacture serving the export industry, with treatment facilities.
East Java
Java
Manufacture close to Surabaya and the export flow.
West Java
Java
Production serving the Jakarta industrial base.
Documentation, where applicable.
- ISPM 15 mark
- Applied by an authorised facility. It is the mark rather than a certificate that travels with the pallet.1
- SVLK certificate
- Timber legality for the wood used, required for wood products leaving Indonesia.2
- Certificate of analysis
- Moisture content and dimensional tolerance where the pallets enter automated handling.
- Certificate of origin
- Which form applies depends on the destination and the preference scheme in force with Indonesia.
Questions buyers ask.
Does the pallet under my goods need treating?
Yes, wood packaging is regulated separately from what it carries, and an untreated or incorrectly marked pallet can stop the whole container. This applies to the crates as well.
Can I use the same pallets in Europe?
Only if they meet the size and construction that European handling expects, and custom Indonesian pallets frequently do not. Decide whether they are one-trip or reusable before ordering.
Why did my pallets arrive mouldy?
They were made from timber that was too wet. Heat treatment kills pests and it does not dry the wood, so moisture content is a separate specification line.
