Minahasa cloves

Minahasa in North Sulawesi is a registered clove origin and one of the country's main producing areas. The commercial fact that shapes every clove purchase here is domestic: Indonesia's kretek cigarette industry consumes most of the national crop and it bids first.

A protected name.

Cengkeh Minahasa

IG.00.2014.0000171

Registered for North Sulawesi. Cloves from North Maluku hold a separate registration under Cengkeh Moloku Kie Raha.

What makes it different.

The domestic buyer sets the floor
Kretek manufacturing absorbs the bulk of Indonesian cloves. An export offer competes with that demand, which is why clove prices move on domestic news.
Smallholder groves
Trees are grown in mixed smallholdings across the region alongside coconut and nutmeg, and picking is seasonal hand labour.
Bud, stem and leaf are three trades
Whole buds go to the spice and cigarette markets, stems and fallen leaves feed the distillers. The same region supplies all three at very different prices.
Bitung handles the export
The port is close, which is unusual for an Indonesian spice origin and shortens the inland leg considerably.

Questions buyers ask.

Why are Indonesian cloves expensive if Indonesia grows so many?

Because most of them never leave. The kretek cigarette industry is the largest clove buyer in the world and it is domestic, so an exporter is bidding against it for the same crop. Volume and price are set by that competition more than by the export market.

What is the difference between bud, stem and leaf?

Whole buds are the spice, and they carry the price. Stems and fallen leaves have far lower value and go to distillation for eugenol. They come from the same trees and the same villages, and confusing them on a purchase order is a common and expensive error.

Should I buy from Minahasa or from Maluku?

Both are registered origins with real production. Minahasa has the shorter logistics because Bitung is on the doorstep. The eastern origins have the history and, at times, better availability when the domestic buyers are focused elsewhere.
