Packing for a tropical voyage.

A container leaving Indonesia is a hot humid box that crosses cooler water and arrives somewhere dry. Moisture condenses inside it, and most transit damage on Indonesian goods traces to that single fact plus packaging that was chosen for cost rather than for the journey.

Container sweat, and why it ruins things.

Warm humid air is sealed in with the cargo at loading. As the container crosses cooler water the steel cools, moisture condenses on the ceiling and walls, and it rains inside the box onto whatever is underneath.

Cargo that was loaded damp makes it worse, because the cargo itself supplies the moisture. Wood, agricultural goods, natural fibre and paper packaging all carry water and all release it.

What stops it is a combination: cargo dried to the right moisture before loading, desiccant sized for the cargo and the route, liners where appropriate, and stowage that keeps goods off the walls and the floor.

Four failure modes.

Each arrives as a claim and each is prevented at loading rather than argued about afterwards.

  1. 01

    Mould

    On furniture, rattan, natural fibre, dried agricultural goods and leather. Caused by moisture in the cargo or condensation on it. The most common single claim on Indonesian shipments and almost entirely preventable.

  2. 02

    Movement damage

    Goods shifting in an underfilled container, or heavy items above light ones. A container packed in the order things arrived rather than to a plan produces this reliably.

  3. 03

    Insects

    Dried plant material, wood and natural fibre attract pests, and infestation found at arrival can condemn a consignment. Treatment and sealed packaging are the answer, plus a clean container.

  4. 04

    Crushing

    Stacking heights chosen for volume efficiency rather than for what the carton can bear. Ceramics, glass and anything in a light carton fail here.

What to specify.

Moisture content of the goods at loading, measured with an instrument. Inner packaging and whether it is a moisture barrier. Carton construction and stacking height. Pallet type and the heat treatment mark. Desiccant. Container inspection before loading, because a container with a hole or a previous cargo residue is a problem you inherit.

Then photographs at loading, in sequence, including the closed doors and the seal. They cost nothing and they are the difference between a claim and an argument.

Questions buyers ask.

Whose fault is mould damage?

Usually nobody's, in insurance terms, which is the unpleasant part. Insufficient packing and inherent vice are standard exclusions, so a cargo that arrived mouldy because it was packed damp is often not covered. That is exactly why the moisture specification belongs in the contract.

Are desiccants worth it?

On hygroscopic cargo from a tropical origin on a long route, yes, and they have to be sized for the cargo rather than thrown in. They are also not a substitute for drying the goods properly. A wet cargo with desiccant is still a wet cargo.

Should I inspect the empty container?

It is a five-minute check that catches holes, damp, smells and residue from a previous cargo. On food and on anything that absorbs odour it matters a great deal, and it is part of what a loading supervision covers.
