BPOM registration
BPOM is the Indonesian authority for food, drugs, traditional medicines and cosmetics. It registers products placed on the Indonesian market, whether made locally or imported. Exporters meet it because a producer selling domestically will hold it, and because buyers routinely mistake it for something it is not.
The essentials.

- Registration of a product for sale on the Indonesian domestic market, granted by the national food and drug authority.1

- Food, beverages, cosmetics, traditional medicines, supplements and drugs, whether produced in Indonesia or imported into it.1
- Why an exporter has one
- Because they also sell at home. A producer with no domestic line may have no BPOM number and still be a perfectly good exporter.1
Who asks for it.
No export shipment needs this. It is an Indonesian domestic registration for selling inside the country, and it has no bearing on a container leaving it. Suppliers quote it as a credential often enough that it is worth knowing what it does not buy you.
What it does not cover.
It is not an export document
Nothing about a BPOM number helps a consignment enter your market. It is an Indonesian domestic registration and it travels nowhere.
It does not replace your own market's rules
A cosmetic with a BPOM number still needs whatever the destination requires, which for the European Union means a notification and a Responsible Person. The two systems do not recognise each other.
Questions buyers ask.
Should I ask a supplier for their BPOM number?
It is a reasonable question and a weak signal. It shows the company sells domestically and has been through an approval process. It says nothing about whether they can meet your market's requirements, and its absence is not a warning sign on its own.
Do I need BPOM to import into Indonesia?
Yes, for products in scope. If you are selling into Indonesia rather than buying from it, this is the registration you will be dealing with, and it sits with whoever places the product on that market.
