Pencil slats
Pencil slats are small softwood boards, grooved to take graphite leads and glued in pairs to make pencils. Indonesia produces them from plantation timber. It is a precision timber product where the tolerances are tighter than anything else in the wood trade.
How it leaves the country.
- Grooved slats
- Machined with parallel grooves to a specified pitch and depth. The standard export product.
- Plain slats
- Sized and dried but not grooved, for buyers who groove in their own plant.
- Wax or colour treated
- Treated to improve sharpening behaviour and appearance. A processing option rather than a different product.
- Finished pencils
- Full manufacture in Indonesia. A different purchase with branding, labelling and product safety attached.
How it is graded.
Everything is a tolerance and one test decides acceptance: how the slat sharpens. Wood that will not sharpen cleanly is worthless whatever it measures.
- Sharpening behaviour
- The slat has to cut cleanly in a sharpener without splintering or tearing. It is tested rather than inferred, and it is the acceptance criterion.
- Dimensional tolerance
- Thickness, width and groove pitch to tenths of a millimetre. Outside tolerance the slats do not glue up square and the pencil is scrap.
- Moisture content
- Tight and consistent. Variation moves the dimensions after machining, which is why this is controlled harder than in any other timber product.
- Species and density
- Softwood with even, straight grain and low density. Plantation pine and similar species, and the grain direction matters.
- Knots and defects
- Almost none tolerated. A knot in a pencil is a broken lead and a jammed sharpener.
- Colour uniformity
- Matters where the pencil is finished natural or lightly coated.
How it is packed.
- Bundled in cartons
- Tight bundles that keep the slats flat. A bowed slat is out of tolerance regardless of how it was machined.
- Moisture control
- The whole product is a moisture specification. Sealed packing and a stable stow protect the dimensions you paid for.
- Weight
- Dense packing of small pieces. A container weighs out before it fills.
- Wood packaging rules
- Pallets and crates carry their own treatment and marking requirement.

- Dimensional tolerance and moisture content on the shipped lot, plus a sharpening test result.
- Lacey Act declaration
- For the United States, naming species, country of harvest, quantity and value.2
- ISPM 15 mark
- On the pallet and any crate, regulated separately from the goods.3
Questions buyers ask.
Why are the tolerances so tight?
Because two slats are glued together around leads and then machined into a pencil at high speed. A fraction of a millimetre out and the halves do not meet, which produces scrap rather than a slightly worse pencil.
How is sharpening tested?
By sharpening samples from the lot and examining the cut. It is a physical test on the actual material, and no measurement substitutes for it.
Can I buy plain slats and groove them myself?
Yes, if you have the machinery, and it moves both the cost and the tolerance risk to your plant. Most buyers take grooved slats and specify the pitch.
