Krui damar agroforests
The damar gardens around Krui on Lampung's west coast are planted forest. Families established the trees, tap them for resin and pass the gardens to their children. It looks like forest and it is a cultivated crop with owners.
What makes it different.
- Planted, not harvested wild
- The repong damar system is agroforestry: dipterocarp trees established deliberately, interplanted, and held as family property across generations.
- Tapping rather than felling
- The tree keeps producing for decades, which makes a standing tree worth more than a felled one. That is the whole conservation argument and it is a commercial fact rather than a slogan.
- Ownership and inheritance
- Gardens are divided and inherited, so a supply chain here runs through many small owners rather than a plantation.
- Grading by hand
- Resin is sorted by clarity and lump size after collection. The grading work is where the value is added and where it can be lost.

- The west coast is a road journey from the province's port and airport, which is the main logistical constraint.
- Heat
- Resin softens and fuses in a hot container. Storage before loading and stow on the vessel both matter.

Is Krui damar wild harvested?
No, and that is the point. The trees were planted and are owned, which makes the supply chain traceable in a way that genuine wild collection rarely is.
Can I make a conservation claim about it?
There is a real story here and any claim you print has to be evidenced by your own supply chain rather than by the region's reputation. Document the chain before writing anything on a label.
How is quality controlled at origin?
By hand sorting after collection. Since the grading is manual and the grade names are not standardised, buy against a sealed reference sample.
