Berau cocoa
Berau in East Kalimantan is a registered cocoa origin, which is unusual because most Indonesian cocoa comes from Sulawesi and is traded without an origin name at all. Cocoa here is smallholder-grown, and fermentation is what separates a usable lot from a commodity one.
A protected name.
Kakao Berau
E-IG.13.2019.0000171
Registered for East Kalimantan. Indonesian cocoa is mostly sold unfermented and unnamed, so a registered origin here is the exception.
What makes it different.
- Fermentation is the dividing line
- Much Indonesian cocoa is sold unfermented, which suits butter pressing and rules it out for fine chocolate. A named origin is worth little unless the beans were fermented properly.
- Smallholder plots in forest country
- Farms are small and they sit in a landscape that the European deforestation rules examine closely. Plot geolocation is the practical work.
- Far from the cocoa mainstream
- Sulawesi dominates Indonesian cocoa and sets the trading habits. A Kalimantan origin operates outside that flow, with its own collectors.
- Kalimantan logistics
- Berau is in the north-east of the island. Cargo moves through Balikpapan or Samarinda, and the inland leg is significant.
What we source here.
Indonesian cocoa beans
Why fermentation decides the price, what the national grade does not cover, and the documents an Indonesian cocoa shipment needs including EUDR.
EUDR and Indonesian goods
What the EU Deforestation Regulation covers, the 30 December 2026 deadline, Indonesia's standard-risk classification, and why an SVLK certificate does not answer it.
How to verify an Indonesian supplier
Two public government registries, the cross-check between them that catches most problems before a deposit moves, and the part only a visit can answer.
Questions buyers ask.
Is Indonesian cocoa fermented?
Often it is not. A large share of the national crop is sold unfermented because the grinding industry that buys it does not need fermentation for butter and powder. If you are making chocolate that tastes of its origin, fermentation is the first question and the origin name is the second.
Why does the deforestation regulation matter so much here?
Because cocoa is one of the seven commodities inside it and Kalimantan is forest country. From December 2026 a European buyer needs geolocation for the plots the beans came from, and gathering that across many smallholdings takes months rather than weeks.
Can I get fine flavour cocoa from Indonesia?
In small quantities and from producers who have chosen to ferment and dry properly. It exists, and it is not what the bulk of the country's crop is set up to deliver. Expect to work with a specific fermentary rather than with a region.
What does your service cost?
Five per cent of the order value, paid by you and never by the factory. A factory audit starts at $250 depending on location. We work with orders from $10,000 per shipment.
Buying from Berau?
Tell us the specification and the port. We go to the region, look at the material and put the documents together before anyone quotes a price.
