Importing from Indonesia to United States.
Food entering the United States sits under three separate FDA requirements: the producing facility has to be registered, the consignment has to be notified before it arrives, and the American importer has to run a verification programme for the foreign supplier. All three fall on the US side.
Tariff treatment.
Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →
Who you deal with on arrival.
- Prior notice
- Advance electronic notification of the consignment to the FDA before it arrives, within the window set for the transport mode.1
- Facility registration
- Foreign facilities producing, processing, packing or holding food for the US market register with the FDA and renew that registration.1
- Supplier verification
- The American importer runs a programme verifying that the foreign supplier meets US requirements. It is the importer's obligation, not the producer's.1
- Non-food goods
- Furniture, homeware and industrial materials sit outside the FDA regime entirely and face their own product rules instead.
Where it lands.
Los Angeles and Long Beach
The main Pacific entry and the shortest routing from Indonesia.
New York and New Jersey
East coast entry, longer at sea and closer to a large share of the buyers.
By category.
Coffee, cocoa and spices
Full FDA regime: registered facility, prior notice, and the importer's verification programme.
Furniture, wood and rattan
Outside FDA. What applies instead is the formaldehyde emission standard for composite wood and the legality declaration for timber species.
Seafood
FDA regime plus a seafood-specific control programme, and for some species an additional import monitoring requirement.
Essential oils and personal care
Cosmetic ingredients face their own registration and labelling rules, which have been tightened in recent years.
Questions buyers ask.
Does my Indonesian supplier register with the FDA?
The facility does, and the American importer usually has to check that it has. The registration belongs to the plant, so a supplier switching production between sites can quietly break your compliance.
What is supplier verification?
A programme the American importer runs to satisfy themselves that the foreign supplier meets US standards. It means audits, testing or documentary evidence depending on the risk, and it is a recurring obligation rather than a one-off.
Is wood furniture easier?
Different rather than easier. It leaves the FDA regime and enters formaldehyde emission rules and timber legality declarations. The paperwork is smaller and the emission standard has to be built into the panel.
