Importing from Indonesia to Turkey.

Turkey buys Indonesian material to process and to move on, serving both European and Middle Eastern customers. It runs its own food control and conformity regime rather than the European one, and its customs union with the EU covers industrial goods rather than agriculture.

Tariff treatment.

Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →

Who you deal with on arrival.

Own food regime
The agriculture and forestry ministry controls imported food under national rules, with registration and inspection at designated entry points.1
Conformity assessment
Regulated industrial products face conformity assessment against Turkish standards before release.
Customs union, with limits
The customs union with the EU covers industrial goods. Agriculture sits outside it, so European precedents do not carry across.1
A bridge market
Much of what lands is processed and re-exported, which shapes demand towards bulk and semi-finished material.

Where it lands.

  • Ambarlı and Istanbul

The main entry for the Marmara industrial region and the largest concentration of buyers.

  • Mersin

The southern gateway, serving the industrial south and the routes onward into the region.

By category.

  • Coffee, cocoa and spices

A substantial processing industry buying bulk material, and a growing speciality coffee market in the cities.

  • Furniture, wood and rattan

Turkey manufactures furniture at scale, so demand runs to materials and components rather than finished pieces.

  • Seafood

Its own fishery and aquaculture, so imports are narrow and specific to what it is short of.

  • Essential oils and personal care

A real fragrance and cosmetics manufacturing base buying raw materials, several of which Indonesia supplies.

Questions buyers ask.

Does the EU customs union help?

For industrial goods it changes the tariff position, and agriculture sits outside it entirely. Do not assume a European precedent applies, because on food it usually does not.

Is Turkey a market or a route?

Both. A great deal of what lands is processed and moved on to Europe or the Middle East, which means buyers think in bulk and in input cost rather than in retail presentation.

What does Turkey buy from Indonesia?

Raw and semi-finished material for its own manufacturing: bulk spices, coconut products, timber and essential oils. Finished consumer goods compete against a large domestic industry.
