Importing from Indonesia to Thailand.

Thailand runs one of Asia's largest food processing industries and buys raw material to feed it. Imported food falls under the Thai Food and Drug Administration, and registration sits with the Thai importer rather than with the Indonesian producer.

Tariff treatment.

Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →

Who you deal with on arrival.

Thai FDA registration
Food, cosmetics and related products are controlled by the Thai food and drug authority, with product registration and import licensing held on the Thai side.1
The buyer is usually a factory
Demand concentrates in processors buying inputs, so specifications are technical and quantities are container-scale.
Halal matters commercially
Thailand exports halal-certified food across the region, so an ingredient's halal status can decide whether a processor can use it.
A re-export platform
A large share of what lands is processed and shipped on, which shapes buyers towards consistency and away from origin storytelling.

Where it lands.

  • Laem Chabang

The main deep-sea container port, serving the eastern industrial corridor.

  • Bangkok

The river port, used for smaller vessels and for cargo destined for the capital.

By category.

  • Coffee, cocoa and spices

A large processing and instant coffee industry buying bulk input, alongside a fast-growing speciality café sector in the cities.

  • Furniture, wood and rattan

Thailand makes furniture too, so demand runs to materials, components and designs it does not produce.

  • Seafood

One of the world's biggest seafood processors, buying raw material at scale to process and re-export.

  • Essential oils and personal care

A substantial cosmetics manufacturing base, with registration and ingredient rules applied to the finished product.

Questions buyers ask.

Who registers the product, me or the supplier?

The Thai side. Registration and import licensing sit with the importer under Thai rules, so an Indonesian producer cannot arrange it for you and should not claim to.

Does Thailand buy finished consumer goods?

Some, and the weight of demand is on inputs. Thailand manufactures a great deal itself, so finished goods compete against a strong domestic industry with shorter lead times.

Is halal certification worth having?

If your buyer exports processed food onward it often is, because a non-halal ingredient can disqualify their finished product from markets they sell to. Ask the buyer rather than assuming.
