Destination market

Importing from Indonesia to Spain.

Spain takes Indonesian cargo through its Mediterranean ports, principally Valencia and Algeciras. It is a processing market as much as a consuming one, which shows in what buyers ask for: bulk material for further work rather than retail-ready goods.

Tariff treatment.

Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →

Who you deal with on arrival.

Mediterranean routing
Valencia and Algeciras sit on the main east to west lane, and each operates designated border control posts approved for specific categories.1
The Canaries are different
The Canary Islands sit outside the EU VAT area and carry their own import tax. Confirm the destination within Spain rather than assuming one answer.
Labelling in Spanish
Consumer information has to reach the buyer in Spanish, which is a production decision rather than a warehouse one.
A processing market
Much of what lands is worked further before sale, which changes the specification conversation towards bulk and away from presentation.

Where it lands.

  • Valencia

The largest Spanish container port and the main entry for consumer and industrial goods.

  • Algeciras

A major transhipment hub at the Strait, often a relay rather than a final destination.

By category.

  • Coffee, cocoa and spices

Plant health stream and prior notification, with a strong domestic processing and roasting industry behind it. EUDR from December 2026.

  • Furniture, wood and rattan

A real market, particularly for outdoor and hospitality furniture. V-Legal, EUDR and ISPM 15 apply.

  • Seafood

One of Europe's largest seafood markets by consumption, with a correspondingly experienced import trade.

  • Essential oils and personal care

The deepest European market for natural perfumery materials, and the most demanding on documented composition.

Questions buyers ask.

Why is Spain interesting for seafood?

Because consumption per head is among the highest in Europe and the import trade is deep and experienced. Buyers here know the product and negotiate accordingly, which cuts both ways.

Valencia or Algeciras?

Valencia for goods staying in Spain, Algeciras more often for transhipment onward. If your cargo is destined for Spanish buyers, landing at Valencia usually shortens the inland leg materially.

Do I need Spanish labelling for everything?

For anything reaching a consumer, yes. Bulk material going to a processor is a different case. Since Spain buys a lot for further processing, the answer depends on which channel your goods enter.
