Importing from Indonesia to South Korea.

South Korea requires imported food to be declared to its food and drug authority, which inspects on a risk basis. The inspection rate applied to a product and a producer rises with their failure history, which makes a supplier's record part of what you are buying.

Tariff treatment.

Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →

Who you deal with on arrival.

Import declaration
Food consignments are declared to the food and drug authority before release, with the importer carrying the obligation.
Risk-based inspection
Selection for testing follows the product and the history of the supplier rather than being uniform.
A record that follows you
A failed consignment raises the inspection rate on subsequent shipments from the same producer, which is a real cost.
Origin form
The ASEAN and Korea agreement has its own origin form, and presenting a different one loses the preference.1

Where it lands.

  • Busan

The dominant Korean port and one of the largest in the world, handling most containerised imports.

  • Incheon

Serving the Seoul metropolitan area with shorter inland distances.

By category.

  • Coffee, cocoa and spices

Import declaration and risk-based inspection, in a market with a large and sophisticated speciality coffee sector.

  • Furniture, wood and rattan

Outside the food regime, with its own product safety and formaldehyde requirements.

  • Seafood

Declaration and inspection, in one of the world's largest seafood consuming markets per head.

  • Essential oils and personal care

Cosmetic regulation is detailed and enforced, and claims are scrutinised closely.

Questions buyers ask.

Why does the inspection rate matter so much?

Because a supplier with failures behind them costs you time and testing on every subsequent shipment. Asking a prospective producer about their Korean import history is a specific and revealing question.

Is Korea demanding on quality?

Yes, particularly on appearance and consistency, and the speciality segments are as exacting as any market in the world. Sampling and clear specification matter more here than average.

Which origin form applies?

The one under the ASEAN and Korea agreement. Confirm it with your supplier before shipment, because the wrong form means paying the standard rate.
