Importing from Indonesia to Slovakia.

Slovakia has no coastline, so every sea shipment enters the European Union somewhere else and moves inland. EU rules apply in full. The decision that matters most is which port and which inland leg, because the difference is measured in real money.

Tariff treatment.

Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →

Who you deal with on arrival.

The veterinary and food administration
The state veterinary and food administration handles food safety and animal product control, applying EU law nationally.1
Choose the port deliberately
Koper, Hamburg, Rotterdam and the Polish ports all serve Slovakia. The right one depends on where the goods land inland and on rail availability, and the default is rarely the cheapest.
Transit or clear at entry
Goods can be cleared at the port of entry or moved under transit and cleared inland. This affects who holds the customs obligation and when duty and VAT fall due.
An industrial buyer base
Manufacturing is a large part of the economy, so a good deal of demand is industrial input and component supply rather than retail-ready product.

Where it lands.

  • Koper

Frequently the shortest total transit from Asia for central European destinations.

  • Hamburg

Deep rail connections into central Europe and very high service frequency.

  • Gdańsk

The Polish gateway, competitive for northern and eastern inland points.

  • Bratislava

The Danube river port, relevant for bulk and project cargo rather than containers.

By category.

  • Coffee, cocoa and spices

Regional roasting and food manufacturing, with buying often done through traders in neighbouring markets.

  • Furniture, wood and rattan

A substantial domestic wood and furniture sector, so tropical species and components are the natural import.

  • Seafood

Border control takes place at the coastal entry point, and the goods arrive inland already cleared or under transit.

  • Personal care and essential oils

EU cosmetic requirements apply, with contract manufacturing in the wider region.

Questions buyers ask.

Which port should a Slovak importer use?

Price at least Koper, Hamburg and Gdańsk on total landed cost including the inland leg. The gap between them is large enough that the habit of always using one is usually costing something.

Where do border checks happen?

At the point of entry into the union, which is the coastal port rather than Slovakia. That is where the veterinary and plant health control takes place for goods that need it.

Can I clear inland instead of at the port?

Yes, by moving under a transit procedure. Whether that is better depends on your VAT position and on where your customs representative operates, so it is a question for your broker rather than for the exporter.
