Importing from Indonesia to Portugal.
Portugal applies the EU regime through ASAE, an authority that combines food safety with economic enforcement, so labelling and commercial practice are examined alongside safety. Its Atlantic ports are a genuine first-call option for cargo that does not need to reach northern Europe.
Tariff treatment.
Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →
Who you deal with on arrival.
- ASAE combines two roles
- Food safety and economic enforcement in one authority, so labelling, claims and commercial practice are examined alongside product safety.1
- Atlantic first call
- Sines and Lisbon are early calls on services from Asia around the Cape or through Suez, which can shorten the sea leg for Iberian buyers.
- Portuguese labelling
- Required for retail sale, and distinct from Spanish. Artwork prepared for one does not serve the other.
- A long spice trade
- Historic trading links with Asia have left a real spice and colonial goods trade, and buyers who know the products.

Questions buyers ask.
Is Sines useful for an Indonesian shipment?
It is a deep-water port and a major transhipment hub, and it is often an early European call on Asian services. For Iberian buyers that can shorten the voyage. For cargo destined further north it usually means a transhipment anyway.
Can I use Spanish labelling?
No. Portuguese and Spanish are different languages and the requirements are national. Preparing one set of artwork for Iberia is a mistake that surfaces at inspection rather than at booking.
What does Portugal buy from Indonesia?
Spices above all, with a trade that goes back centuries and buyers who know the products. Seafood is significant because consumption per head is among the highest in Europe. Furniture demand runs to materials as much as to finished pieces.
