Importing from Indonesia to Mexico.
Mexico splits control between a health authority for food and cosmetics and the agriculture ministry for plant and animal health. Labelling follows national standards in Spanish, and the Pacific ports make this one of the shorter Asian routings in the Americas.
Tariff treatment.
Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →
Who you deal with on arrival.
- COFEPRIS for food and cosmetics
- The federal health risk authority controls food, beverages, cosmetics and supplements entering the country, and the obligation sits with the Mexican importer.1
- Labelling under national standards
- Mexican official standards set the labelling requirements, in Spanish, and they are specific enough that artwork has to be settled before production.1
- The Pacific coast is the natural entry
- Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas face Asia directly, which makes the sea leg from Indonesia considerably shorter than routing through the Gulf side.
- A manufacturing economy
- A great deal of demand is industrial input for domestic manufacturing and for onward supply into North America, rather than retail product.
Where it lands.
Manzanillo
The largest Pacific container port and the usual entry from Asia.
Lázaro Cárdenas
The second Pacific gateway, with rail connections inland.
Veracruz
The Gulf entry, sensible only for buyers in the east and a much longer voyage.
By category.
Coffee, cocoa and spices
Mexico grows coffee and cocoa itself, so demand runs to what it does not: pepper, cassia, nutmeg and specific grades.
Furniture, wood and rattan
Outside the food regime, with product standards and Spanish labelling applying instead.
Seafood
Its own Pacific and Gulf fisheries, so imports are specific and the health authority controls them.
Essential oils and personal care
A substantial cosmetics manufacturing sector buying raw materials, with registration for finished products sold locally.
Questions buyers ask.
Which Mexican port should I use?
Manzanillo or Lázaro Cárdenas for almost any Indonesian shipment. They face Asia and the voyage is far shorter than routing to the Gulf coast. Veracruz makes sense only if the buyer is in the east and the inland cost from the Pacific outweighs the extra sea time.
Who arranges the labelling?
The requirement falls on the product sold in Mexico, so in practice the Mexican importer specifies it and the producer prints it. Settle the artwork against the national standard before production, because relabelling a container is expensive and sometimes impossible.
Does Mexico buy Indonesian coffee?
Some, and it grows its own arabica in quantity. The more natural trade is in what Mexico does not produce: pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, coconut products and industrial inputs.
