Importing from Indonesia to Latvia.
Latvia is an EU member with a large port relative to its population, because a substantial share of what lands keeps moving. The first question for a buyer is whether the goods stay in Latvia or cross it.
Tariff treatment.
Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →
Who you deal with on arrival.
- The Food and Veterinary Service
- Food safety, veterinary and plant health control sit with the national service, which administers EU requirements and handles border control.1
- Transit or destination
- Much Baltic freight is not consumed locally. Whether goods are released into free circulation here or move on under transit changes the duty point and the obligations.
- EU rules in full
- Union food law, product safety and customs apply, with a national authority administering them.
- Winter
- Baltic ports work through winter with icebreaker support and severe conditions still cause delay. Build slack into arrivals between December and March.
Where it lands.
Riga
The main container port and the regional gateway.
Ventspils
An ice-free port oriented to bulk traffic.
Liepāja
A smaller port handling general and project cargo.
By category.
Coffee, cocoa and spices
Roasting and food manufacturing for the region, with speciality demand above what the population suggests.
Furniture, wood and rattan
A strong domestic wood industry, so imports run to tropical species and components.
Seafood
Baltic fishing and processing exists, and tropical species are a distinct trade with border control at entry.
Personal care and essential oils
EU cosmetic rules apply, with regional distribution beyond the domestic market.
Questions buyers ask.
Riga, Tallinn or Klaipėda?
Compare them on inland cost to where the goods are actually consumed. The three Baltic gateways are close enough that the answer changes with the destination.
Does winter affect shipments?
Ports operate year round with icebreaker support and hard winters cause delays. Do not promise exact arrival dates in the deep winter months.
Do I need a Latvian entity?
You need an importer of record established in the EU, which does not have to be Latvian.
