Importing from Indonesia to Kenya.
Kenya operates a standards-based import regime with verification of conformity before shipment for many goods. Mombasa serves not only Kenya but several landlocked countries inland, which shapes what moves through it.
Tariff treatment.
Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →
Who you deal with on arrival.
- Kenya Bureau of Standards
- National standards and conformity assessment are administered by the standards bureau, and many imports require verification of conformity arranged before shipment.1
- Verification before shipment
- Many goods require conformity verification arranged at origin before the container sails. It cannot be done retrospectively.
- Mombasa serves the region
- The port is the gateway for several landlocked countries, so a share of what lands keeps moving inland across borders.
- Standards are the gate
- For many product categories, meeting a Kenyan standard is what decides entry, separately from customs.
- English labelling
- Consumer products carry labelling requirements and English is used, which removes a translation step many markets impose.

Questions buyers ask.
What is verification of conformity?
An assessment carried out at origin, before shipment, confirming the goods meet the applicable Kenyan standard. Arrange it during production rather than at the booking.
Does Kenya import Indonesian coffee?
Rarely, since it grows its own. The realistic trade is spices, coconut products, furniture and industrial inputs.
Where does clearance happen?
Frequently at an inland container depot rather than at the port, which affects timing and cost. Confirm with your clearing agent.
