Destination market
Importing from Indonesia to Italy.
Italy sits at the Mediterranean end of the route from Indonesia, which makes it the shortest sea leg into Europe. Import health control for food runs through maritime and border health offices at the ports, alongside the veterinary posts that handle animal products.
Tariff treatment.
Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →
Who you deal with on arrival.
- Maritime health offices
- Health control on food of non-animal origin runs through maritime, aviation and border health offices with local offices at the main ports.1
- Veterinary posts
- Animal products including seafood go through designated border control posts approved for that category.1
- The shortest sea leg
- Mediterranean entry saves days against northern Europe on a route through Suez, which matters most for anything with a shelf life.
- Onward movement
- Goods released here move within the EU without further customs formalities, and northern Italy is well connected to central Europe.
Where it lands.
Genoa
The main northern Italian container port, feeding the industrial north and beyond.
Gioia Tauro
A transhipment hub in the south, more often a relay than a final destination.
By category.
Coffee, cocoa and spices
A serious coffee market with a long roasting tradition and exacting buyers. EUDR applies from December 2026.
Furniture, wood and rattan
A design-led market that buys on finish and detail. V-Legal, EUDR and ISPM 15 all apply.
Seafood
Veterinary stream through an approved post, with catch documentation and an EU-listed establishment.
Essential oils and personal care
Chemical control rather than food. REACH obligations sit with the importer or an appointed representative.
Questions buyers ask.
Is Mediterranean entry worth it?
For southern European buyers and for anything time-sensitive, usually yes: it saves days at sea. For a buyer in the Netherlands it rarely beats landing at Rotterdam even with the shorter voyage.
How demanding is the Italian coffee trade?
Very, on cup profile and consistency, and less concerned with certification than northern European buyers. It is a market where the sample matters more than the paperwork, within the limits of what the law requires.
Do Italian buyers care about certification?
Less than northern European ones and more than they used to. On coffee especially the cup decides, within whatever the law requires. Do not assume a certificate substitutes for a sample here.

What changes on 1 January 2027
Indonesia leaves the EU's Generalised Scheme of Preferences, and that part is already law. The trade agreement meant to replace it still needs three approvals. What an EU buyer should check now.
EUDR and Indonesian goods
What the EU Deforestation Regulation covers, the 30 December 2026 deadline, Indonesia's standard-risk classification, and why an SVLK certificate does not answer it.
What a European buyer has to build first
Six obligations that sit on the EU importer, and two dates inside the next eighteen months that change the tariff and the paperwork.
