Hungary has no coastline, so every sea shipment enters the EU elsewhere and moves inland. EU rules apply in full. The entry point decision is worth real money because the inland leg is a large part of the landed cost.

Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. - The national food chain safety office administers food, veterinary and plant health control within the EU framework.1
- Choose the port deliberately
- Koper, Trieste, Hamburg and the Polish ports all serve Hungary. The right one depends on the inland destination and on rail availability.
- Transit or clear at entry
- Goods can clear at the port or move under transit and clear inland, which changes who holds the customs obligation and when duty falls due.
- A manufacturing economy
- A large industrial base, so a good share of demand is input material rather than retail-ready product.

Which port should a Hungarian importer use?
Price Koper, Trieste and Hamburg on total landed cost including the inland leg. The habit of always using one is usually costing something.
Where do border checks happen?
At the point of entry into the union, which is the coastal port rather than Hungary. That is where veterinary and plant health control takes place.
Can I clear inland?
Yes, under a transit procedure. Whether that suits you depends on your VAT position and on where your customs representative operates.
